Tidy Fan Cabling

Using fan controller positioned in (front-side) 3 1/2 inch bay. Connecting two
rear and two front side fans to it. Don't want any fan cabling going through
the middle of the system. Wonder how others handle this.

Do you use electrical tape with the fan cabling against the side of the case?
If so, are you concerned about the side of the (metal) case being too hot? Is
nylon tape (or standard tape) better than electrical?

Same questions seem to apply to a lesser extent to hard disk (+ cd-rom) cabling.
I'm planning on using cable ties for oranization, but still want to keep the
layout clean. Ideas...?

If your case has an "overhang" along the inside of the top panel, you can route fan cables up there (but you'll need some extension cables, of course). This page might give you some ideas: link. This pic in particular is looking up at the underside of the case's top panel, into the "overhang" area where cables are not noticeable.

For managing cables, I usually tuck them wherever they will fit and route them that way (if that makes sense). I also sleeve any cables/wires possible so that they are more organized. You can get fan extender cables that will allow you to run the wires over a longer distance and still have them function properly.

To hold wires in place, I usually use zip ties and secure them wherever possible. If there's no place to secure the wires already in place, then I use items to hold the zip ties down. Frozencpu has the items for different sized zip ties that hold on with double faced tape (already on the items). I've used them before and they hold VERY well. They are not expensive either, which is even better.

I'd avoid using tape inside a system, just like I don't use rubber bands inside computers. Over time, the heat inside the case will degrade the item, or the glue, and it will fail on you. For tape, that can get messy if it loses enough grip to fall. Plus it will leave residue on what it was holding and holding onto as well as where it lands. The rubber bands can fly around inside and get stuck inside fans too (opening up another can of worms you don't want to go near). Zip ties are made to hold things for a long time, under all kinds of conditions and will last longer than your computer will (unless you keep the thing running for 50+ years).

As always, right tool for the job, and don't cut corners when you really don't need to. Zip ties are CHEAP (check Home Depot).

3M has some clipping devices, that use removable adhesive strips, that work REALLY well. They have a little plastic bar that locks into place over the wires. You can find them at Home Depot on the same display as the Velcro solutions.

Very nice. Been wondering how that clean look is achieved. My case must be organized
