Ticks me off: Pickup vs. SUV: for what you pay for a....

....stripper SUV, you can get a loaded pickup truck. Argh!:| Several weeks back I started a Pickup VS. SUV thread (this one) to ask for help deciding what to get; a pickup or an SUV.

Well, I've decided....that I can't freakin' decide! I've been looking around. I don't have anything besides TTL to put down. Well, I DO, but that's my Retirement Fund Money and I ain't messin' with it. So, a 35K vehicle is out of my league. Out the door, 30K (preferably less) is my ceiling.

OK, so we do more research. Fully loaded Pathfinder/4Runner/Montero Sport all more than 30K. Way more. So, I go looking....fully loaded Tundra (V8/extended cab) for 28K. What gives here, man? 😕

This just stinks. I'm about 70% SUV and 30% P-up as far as "leaning towards" goes. BTW, to me "fully loaded" means power everything, lighted vanity mirrors, etc. No leather, GPA system, wet bar, etc. I mean loaded, but not LOADED to the gills.

Bah. Humbug. Etc.

when u get an suv ur paying for "oooh factor". If ur like me then you would expect the dealer to pay you to take an ugly freaking suv. Get the pickup; its more useful, and u wont look like some stuipd soccer mom...

<< A car without a wetbar is like woman with no brain. >>

You've found one that has one? Does she have a sister? Heheh. Feminists, put the gun DOWN, just joking here. 😀

I agree with the "wasted space" comment. It's not like I'd be hauling stuff every day...or even every week. It's just that for the price of a tiny little 4-cylinder equipped, 4,000 pound stripped out SUV, I can get a plush pickup with a quality Toyota V8 under the hood. This stinks. I don't know. Maybe I'll just get a Miata. LOL!

I have found both--a friend once offered to sell me an old jag that had cocktail tables and a bar (not a wet bar, though).
The girl has a brain and she's also a killer at paintball. She has a sister, but she's married. She has a brother, but I don't think he goes that way ;-)

Anyway, it sounds like you should just screw all this and get a VW Microbus.
What about getting a pickup and putting a cap on it?

Negatory on the cap idea. To me, capping the bed is kinda negating the whole idea behind getting a pup in the first place. You take away all your hauling space then.

I agree. Just a thought I figure I'd throw out 🙂

I knew a dude who bought a Ford Explorer Snort-Crac and put a cap on it. I kept asking him why he didn't just get an explorer....he never could come up with an answer. He just kept saying "it's not the same."

Well, if you've pretty much decided on a truck (which is what I would do if I had all the stuffs to haul that you do), sniff around local dealerships and find an off-lease Tundra. You should have no problem finding one with low miles, should be cheap as someone else has already taken the "drive it off the lot" hit, and dealers will bargain with you extensively for these things as they bought them at auction and paid JACK SH!T for the thing. With such a huge margin to work with, you should be able to get a good deal with a little tenaciousness on your behalf (I'm guessing you can handle that, based on what I know about you 😉). Plus the dealer should have (in theory) given it a good going-over before putting it on the lot.

Hmm, not a bad idea, Fausto1. I would consider that for an "almost new" vehicle. A low miles 2001...nothing older though. You're right about that "off the lot hit" Lotta dough saved there. 🙂

I bought my Altima with 16,000 miles on the clock and saved about 5 grand vs the sticker price for a new one. Was "dealer certified" (and I actually trust this particular dealership). Just turned 100,000 this weekend and the only major repair was an AC unit last year. I don't think I'll ever buy a new car as you save so much on one that is only slightly used. If a "used" makes you nervous, you can always haggle for extended warranty as well. Again, since the dealerships don't pay jack for these off-lease cars, they have a humongous margin to work with and will eventually accept almost any offer as they're making more loot off these than a new car any day of the week.

well.. i paid $25k for my 2000 Isuzu Rodeo. It's not the top of the line model, no 4WD, no leather, but everything else.. and i haven't had a single problem with it so far. i bought it in Sept. 00 and i've got 15K miles on it.. absolutely perfect. It looks modern, drives fine, didn't cost TOO much compared to other trucks, and has 210 hp V6.

I looked at all the 4runners, durangos, pathfinders, etc etc.. and mine was just the right size and money for what i wanted. Even though it's an Isuzu, it's still just a name. The Honda Passport is the exact same thing and it costs 2K more.

So give the Rodeo some consideration. Here's a CRAPPY PICTURE of an awesome truck (yes truck cuz it's built off a truck platform).

Hey, nice truck, Dieselstation. Funny link too..."Crappy Picture." Hehehe. I'm looking at it now. Isuzu is a big name in Europe. They make trucks. BIG trucks. ME\<---looking at Isuzu now.

lol.. coming from someone who probably cant even drive

SUV's are a very important part of my family. With a normal truck, we would be unable to haul the baby, dog, all the baby's stuff, our stuff, boat or jetski to the lake for a full week.

Depending on what your towing around, you should get a p/u or suv. I just got an f150 supercrew. love it, can put 6 people in there and have the bed also.

btw--I had installed a 'roll-n-lock' bed cover. it rolls out of the way for tall hauling, yet can lock down hard when needed for security.

also--mine is fully loaded, 5.4 liter, lariat edition, for 26k. this was the deciding factor for me, to put me in a similarly equipped suv it was 5-8k more. would have loved it, but to much money.

SUV's suck. You say that the bed is going to be wasted space most of thetime. What about all the interior space in the SUV. A pick up will have more hauling capacity and cargo room than any SUV. Also, pick-ups are much more fun to drive than SUV's. It's easier to peel out, and to do power slides when it ices over. I had a blast last year.

And the $6K you save on the above truck, you can afford to get a water ski to pull behind it.

SUV's recive one of the highest markups above Invoice on the lot,

Honestly in the recession we are having right now, if you can actually afford a vehicle I'd start going to lots and making offers... if they don't meet it walk off, they will ask for your number... TRUST ME they WILL CALL YOU 🙂 They are desparate to make a sale right now.

Thats how I always make my purchases, I go in and say I'll pay this much and want this much on my trade can you help me, they say no begin to walk... DON'T let them take your keys to your tradein if thats what your doing, they will use that to prevent you from just walking off, you have to ask em for the key and they will begin to bargain. Let em call you, they will meet on a good price, they did on my truck 🙂

Look into used cars/trucks/SUVs right now - they are really really cheap! Everybody and their mother wants to take advantage of the 0% financing - well guess what, most of those people have 2 year old cars with anywhere between 22K and 40K miles and they just want something new 🙂. I was talking to my uncle (a car dealer) and before Sept 11th (and all the subsequent financing deals), my '95 red Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme coupe with 45K miles would have been worth about 8K - now it would get 5K on its best day. We have a '00 Intrigue, with 15K miles - around 20K new, now worth 10K. I'm sure the same applies to pickup trucks and SUVs. My uncle is trying to buy up all that he can, he told me...eventually used values will go back up 🙂
