Ticking Sound in Notebook

I have a Compaq Presario 2700US and just about an hour ago it started to tick(Loudly). So I turned it off and restarted the computer. But when I restarted the computer it would boot up. But told me a file was missing (\windows\system32\config\system)

It says I need the windows setup cd but my computer didnot come with one.

The computer has not had any hard drive problem to my knowledge but could this be a hard drive gone bad or a software problem. Sounds to me like a hardware problem.

Help please

I think I'd make every effort to back up that hard drive ASAP. Loud internal ticking noises accompanied by missing files sounds like a HDD on it's way out to me. Good luck.

You'll need to have another PC to put the HDD into and attempt recovery from there. If you don't have another system available to you, you're going to have to get help from someone who does.

Your hdd is definately dying. There isn't anything you can really do about it. If there are any important files, recover them first and others later - it may deteriorate even more as you recover the files. You should try to replace the drive under warrany - notebook drives, while not all that expensive, aren't cheap.

well its covered under the Best Buy warranty my dad bought, and i have used it enough for it to pay for it self. I will ask for my hard drive back from them and try when i get time to get some files off i need.
