Tickets to the Chicago Symphony and Lang Lang Tonight

Hey all,

I have tickets to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra tonight. One of the works they're performing is with a wonderful young pianist, Lang Lang, doing the 2nd Rachmaninov Piano Concerto. In addition to this concerto, they're performing the Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony, and a contemporary piece from a new composer which has never been performed before.

So, I'm looking forward to it! I'm really lucky to live a 45 minute drive from one the finest symphonies on the planet. I've always enjoyed Lang Lang's interpretation of Rachmaninov, and I love that concerto, so put the two together and I can't go wrong.

You lucky son of a gun! I wish I was that close to the CSO. Especially for a performance of Tchaik 5! Argh! Oh well, at least I've got the LA Phil.

Have fun! I go to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at least twice a year, and I love it! I am not knowledgable about classical music, but nothing makes your heart move like a live symphony.

Too bad the only person that enjoys it as much as I do is my Mom. nah, my Mom is cool

I have Sviatoslav Richter's 2nd Rach piano concerto(on CD of course), and I love it to death!!
I will be attending a concert this coming friday. It will feature Beethoven's 4th piano concerto and Pastoral symphony
Oh...and the performers are Andre Watt and Salonnen. I am expecting it to be a kick@ss concert~~

I am looking forward to going to the Chicago Symphony as soon as I can. I was going to take my girlfriend their for Valentines day this next weekend, but unfortunatly she cant make it. So I will have to go another time.

Well, it was a glorious concert. I have never been disappointed by anything I've been to at Sympony Center in Chicago, though. Lang Lang played beautifully, and received a standing ovation for his efforts. The "Tchaik 5th" as someone else called it () was definetly thrilling to see with the CSO brass. For those of you who don't know, the CSO is famous for their brass section more than anything. They love those pieces where they get to slap you in the face with trumpet sound. I didn't enjoy the first piece too terribly much, it was its debut from a new composer (who incidentally entered the stage after its completion to accept her appluase). It was a bit too dischordant for my tastes, although I am coming to appreciate the contemporaries a bit more, this was still a bit too much.

All in all, it was $63.00 well spent. The CSO is arguably the finest symphony on earth, and they don't disappoint. I actually had an oppertunity to meet Lang Lang after the performance, but if I had, I wouldn't have been able to go home last night! I took a train, and I would've missed the last one out of Chicago back to where I came from. So, I had to pass. Darn! Even my parents, who were with me, enjoyed it, and...well, let me put it this way: they would have never set foot in that hall if it weren't for me. Because I'm here, they've been there with me nearly a dozen times.

I sat in the third row of terrace right. So, it's like, behind the stage, wrapping around the back of it, but very close. The thing about Symphony Center is that it's so well-designed acoustically that in an audio sense, it doesn't matter where you sit. I've sat, in all the past times I've gone, in all various parts of the hall, and the sound has been crystal clear no matter what. To give you an example, before the concert, a clarinetist was blowing through a piece of his taken-apart clarinet, (I'm presuming trying to get some spit out), and you could hear it as though you were sitting next to him. Every instrument is extremely clear. The lid of the piano was projecting out away from me, so the sound was bouncing off in the opposite direction of where I was sitting. And, I could still hear every note Lang Lang played.

So, it's all a matter of how much you want to see, because the sound will not change no matter where you are.
