This is driving me mad so any ideas would be much appreciated.

I have a Shuttle AV49N motherboard (VIA chipset, up to 8XAGP) running windows 2000.
When I plug in my Asus Ti4400 the PC hangs when I boot windows (before any dialogue box is displayed). I disconnected surplus devices (DVD and floppy) and this time windows boots and I could login and use standard windows stuff. Then when I try to run a 3D game, the PC hung after about 20 seconds (the graphics in the game were corrupt as well). Then when I rebooted the standard bios messages were corrupt (vertical lines of dots across the screen) and the PC hung before any windows dialogues were displayed.
I have borrowed an old GeForce256 which works fine and a friend tested my Ti4400 in his PC and again this worked fine.
The PSU in my case is supposed to be 300W so I can't believe this is a power issue.

Any ideas?

I can. If it happens to be a particularly low quality psu, it definately could be an issue. The problems you describe (lines and whatnot) sound like a psu problem to me. Swap in a different unit and try it.
