Ti4400 Upgrade

Hey all,

I have an MSI GeForce4 Ti4400--I'm currently monkeying with the idea of upgrading, as I'm preparing to upgrade my mobo and CPU (likely to a 2.4Ghz P4)--If I wanted to keep it under $300, is the Radeon 9700 the way to go? Is it even worth upgrading my board at this point?

I just (about an hour and a half ago) upgraded my GF4 Ti 4400 to a Radeon 9800 (non-pro) at stock speeds at the moment, went from 800x600 in Unreal 2 to 1280x960, and turned up texture details etc, and it still runs much better. That's really the only game I've tried so far, but it's a nice improvement, much smoother.
Can't give a definite answer, but all signs point to a 9800 np being a nice upgrade. Might try 3D Mark (2001) and overclocking the card, see what I can get it up to.

Um, you want to upgrade to a 2.4 GHz P4? What do you have now? If it's anything below 2 GHz, I'd recommend keeping the Ti4400 first and upping your CPU/motherboard to something like a Barton2500+/TbredB 1700+ and an Nforce2 motherboard or a P4 2.4C and an Intel 865 chipset motherboard (ie the Abit IS7).

I'd keep the GF4 4400 for the time being. It isn't exactly the smartest point to be upgrading IMO (too much confusion and not enough definite answers). I'd also hold off on upgrading my CPU for a few more months (you will have more options).

A 9800np for $250 or a 9800 pro for $300 would both give you a nice upgrade. However, depending on what the rest of your system is currently, and how soon you will be upgrading, it could be a waste.

Thanks for the opinions...I'm running an Athlon 1800+ on an epox mobo with a VIA KT333 chipset at the moment...2 512MB sticks of PC2700 too...

If I upgrade the CPU/Mobo, it's probably going to happen sometime in november.

I was going to upgrade my Ti4200 to a 9800NP but they aren't making them anymroe it hurts me so much...it was the perfect price performance ratio, I'm now lost of what to upgrade to. Maybe a 9700Pro would be nice but i liked the 9800 due to the refinements in the newer chips.

Is the non-pro the same as the SE?

A 9800SE has 4 pipelines, a 9800 non-pro has 8 pipelines. They are not the same, a 9800 np is a lot faster than an SE.

Any Nvidia GPU = 52.16 drivers = very attractive.

I'm serious, I haven't liked a set of Dets this much since the 30.82s.

EDIT: Well, maybe the 41.09s come close, but I still think the 52.16s are higher ranking in my book.

Stay away from any 9800 with ?SE? on it.
