Ti4200 vs Ti4800SE?

My friend is looking to buy a ~$150 card after his FX5200 died on him. I recommended a Ti4200 or 9500/9600, but he's looking at a Ti4800SE. Can anyone tell or show me where I can find out if the Ti4800SE is better than the other two? He only uses his comp for browsing, emailing, etc. and gaming. Here's his system:

Athlon XP 2200+ @ 1959MHz
Asus A7V8X-X
512MB PC2100 RAM (Generic?)
400W Duro (???) PSU

PS. Anyone know anything about Duro PSUs?

The Ti4800se is just a 4400 with AGP8x support. So, really the only differences between the two are clock speeds, where the 4200 can easily be overclocked to 4400, even 4600, speeds, and support for AGP8x, which makes virtually no difference.

If he can afford it, your (ATI) choices would certainly be better, provided they are 9500/9600 PRO, not just regular. If not, the 4200 is the best value around right now.

OK, he was looking at the refurb cards at Newegg and found a Sappire Atlantis 9700P for 219. Would that be worth it if he can scrape up the money?

sure, but i think you can find NON-refurb 9700 for around 220-230. when something is refurbed it means the person who used it b4 couldn't run it at desired speed so the card may suffer a little.

Yep, but he can get a new 9800 for $20-30 more--best deal for a high-end card, IMO. Refurb cards are iffy, as I think they have a one week warranty. If the card doesn't work, he'll end up paying for return shipping, and it'll come out as much as a new 9800.

Otherwise, a 9600P is a better card than a 4800SE for $150.

you could get a ti4200 for $70 @ newegg refurbs... which is basically the same as a ti4800SE...
a geforce4ti4200 will be faster than a 9600pro with no AA/AF on
good if he has a big monitor and prefers to use high resolutions

No, a ti4200 will be slower than a 9600 pro in all situations. If you want to save money get a ti4200. If you want something that will have a little more longevity get a 9600 pro.

My suggestion? $100AR ($50MIR) Visiontek 9600P @ CompUSA next week. You'll probably have to wake up pretty early tomorrow to get one, as that's an absurd price for this card.

:Q
hmm I'm tempted to get one for myself at that price..

Sunday is the first day of the week you know

What? No! Sunday is the seventh day!

Next you'll say there's no Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny is dead!

Sacrilege! Blasphemy! (Where in all the hells is that foaming-at-the-mouth emoticon?)

Oh, wait - this has foam!

Sales advertised in circulars usually start Sunday, as they're distributed with the Sunday paper.

If you are not a hardcore gamer, or not a professional guy, I would recommand to use the Ti4200.

Since the Ti4200 had dropped down to $100 (even under $90 after MIR), and the performance are not significantly lower than Ti 4800, you should really go for the Ti4200 64MB

I agree w/ Pete, go to the site that he posted......

128MB DDR RAM costs like 50 or so..... w/ it on the graphic card.....great deal

Cripes....

A ti4200 with AA/AF off, is FASTER IN ALL RESOLUTIONS than a 9600 PRO.

1) Linking the same thing twice doesn't count as two pieces of proof.
2) Anything from THG does not count as proof.

In 90% of the cases the 9600 pro IS faster than a ti4200 with no aa/af enabled. If you look at any other benchmarks besides THG you'll see this.

"In 90% of the cases the 9600 pro IS faster than a ti4200 with no aa/af enabled"

Thats like saying "My crap is faster", cause it still looks like crap.

What a stupid thing to argue.

Who plays games w/ no aa or af on???

Thought thats what the whole point of having a decent card was all about.

First, many people play with aa/af off. Maybe you've been living under a rock but there are people who don't give a rats ass about the quality of the picture and just like to have fps. I leave aa/af off when it's too much of a performance hit. Secondly, why the hell is arguing whether a card is faster than another card "stupid." I guess maybe it's stupid if you just run out and buy and card without looking at specs and knowing which will get you better fps.
