Ti4200 vs. 7600GT

I used to play a lot of games, but now I don't play a lot. Does anyone have any experience moving from such an old card in this game to this much-newer card? I run 1280x1024, with minimal details on and it's smooth, but would obviously want to crank it up to max settings with a new card.

1GB RAM (200MHz DDR)
A64 @ 2.0GHz

You might see a tiny bit of graphics lag and other performance issues with that hardware, but it will make a huge improvement over your old card.

If you can afford a bit more, look into a 7900GS. I've seen some with rebates bringing them down into the $130-150 price range. Look into the X1950 Pro and X1650 Pro as well, to get a good idea on what you can get for the money.

I went from a Ti4200 to a 6600GT, and saw a pretty darn big improvement, especially in newer games. I think my 3Dmark score went from something in the 1500s to something in the 6500s. I also went from an AXP 3000+ to an A64 3200+, so a slight CPU jump in there too with faster memory.

I forgot to mention that I have no desire to upgrade my Mobo, so it has to be an AGP card and I don't think the 7900GS comes in an AGP version (and certainly not that cheap).

I benched a 4400 Ti + Athlon XP 2600+ vs. a 6800 GT and a A64 2.0 GHz (X2 3800+ run in single and dual core) in WoW, and found that both original parts were bottlenecks. I.e. it needed the combo of A64 + 6800 GT to get a significant boost in performance.

AFAIK, the 6800 GT compares with the 7600 GT. You're already in A64. So this should be a significant improvement.

Note also that an expansion for WoW is coming out soon. Odds are that it will like still more performance, but still be OK for the millions of users who aren't going to upgrade their hardware but will upgrade the game. Just FYI.

There are rumors of an AGP X1950 Pro, but it'll be more expensive than the PCIe version to be sure. Look at the 7800GS prices compared to PCIe card pricing. For the same price as an AGP 7800GS, you can get a 7900GS/GT, maybe even a 7950GT, all of which are much better cards.

The 'performance' AGP cards are way overpriced for what they offer.

As an option, there's a lot of people selling their s939/PCIe A64 mobos and chips in favor of Core 2 Duos, you may be able to pick up one of those up for cheap, which would give you the option of using a PCIe video card. Something to keep in mind.

get a 6800gt agp

they can be found cheaply, and are a great final destination card for those AGP systems.

i run one myself in my NF3 board.
