Time for a new video card and I need some help. I am just not the same gamer I used to be and I think don't need a 9700, NV30 or ti4600, but I still want a decent card, I need some help from you fellas as I have been out of it for a while. My gut is to go for a souped up 4200 (which one has the best memory and overclocks well?), but I really want good 2D, but I very skeptical about ATI as I have had nothing but bad luck with them and their drivers and software. I am leaning on staying with nvidia because I can install or change up their drivers with my eyes closed. I am more of a tweaker than a gamer and I do like to benchmark, so I want decent power, but not $350 power. Can I get some opinions please? Also, if brand matters, say for a ti4200, please let me know.

Thanks,

LJ

9500 Pro, yea it's ATI, but. It all depends on what games you play when you play them though.

I don't really have knowledge about that card, though it certainly looks cool(no pun intended). You would definitely lose PCI slot1 with it, but that slot is usualy useless when running an AGP card anyway due to IRQ sharing. I believe it is Leadtek who makes GF4 cards with excellent 2d, though you may want to get confirmation on that. 2d quality is always a concern with GeForce cards, so it's very important to be specific with which brand of card you choose.

sandorski - this is very helpful. I will also have a look at the Leadtek's.

Just want to confirm, 3.3ns is faster than 3.6ns, right?

Yes, lower the better, at least as far as overclocking possibilities go. If you do a Search on the forums, you'll be able to get some good info on what GeForce cards have good 2D and what not.

I have an Albatron Ti4200 "Turbo" that OCs to beyond Ti4600 speeds (advertised as such and tested to be confirmed) that I may be letting go of for less than its retail of $190 or so. Its kind of misleading that its a Ti4200 since it has the same 8-layer PCB and 3.3ns BGA RAM as the Ti4600. I just picked up a 9700pro, but due to some instability with my video overlay programs/hardware I may not keep it.

Excellent 2D on my Dell 1900FP LCD (looked good on my G420 as well), but I would have to say the 9700pro looks better. The Ti4200 is a very capable card, and I was posting 3dmarks around 11,000 with it under both rigs in my sig. I was running it at 310/650, but didn't push it more. Just set it and let er rip.

Anyone know what the InfiniteFX II Engine does? I am looking at a Leadtek ti4200 with 128MB for $155 and the Leadteck ti4200 with 64MB. Confusing is that the 128MB is $155 with InfiniteFX II Engine, but the 64MB version is more at $158 but has no mention of InfiniteFX II Engine in the description. Is this what I am paying for and does it make a difference?

There a way too many variations of GF4's in general. I understand to stay away from the MX crap, but there are a zillion variations of the ti4200 and 4400. I would like to get this ordered soon. Leaning toward Leadtek because of the superior 2D.

that refers to the TnL and HSR aspects of the card, the other is LMAII which is the memory controller

quick comparison between ati and nvidia cards. ati cards a far better at handling antialiasing and antiscopic filtering, while nvidia takes a big hit in performance when these are turned on in comparison. but straight out of the box, if you don't turn these features on, dollar for dollar, nvidia wins in speed. if you do use these however, ati is your winner. (9500 pro)

Can someone please answer the question or give an opinion on:

Do I get the Leadtek ti4200 64MB with nfiniteFX for $158?

or

Do I get the Leadtek ti4200 128MB without nfiniteFX for $155?

I guess the question comes down to - Is having nfiniteFX better than having and extra 64MB of memory? Again, I am not an avid gamers, but want the fastest card I can get for ~$150. Something that my P4 3ghz can push.

Larry;
That 64mb card cannot NOT have nfiniteFX. but there might be some other difference between the cards, as the 64mb cant cost more than the 128mb card. maybe the 128mb is OEM or does not have ViVo ?
Where are you getting this stuff from ? link please..

hmmm....decisions decisions. I currently have a Leadtek Winfast GeForce 256 DDR, which is having problems and causing freezes and crashes (I haven't played a game in >6 months), and I already RMA'd it once before. Now I know that this card is old...I bought it in the summer of 2000 (I think), but given the fact that I RMA'd it for a new card in may of 2001, I really think that my current card shouldn't be having these problems.

Sorry for the rambling, the upshot is this - has anyone else had problems with a Leadtek card? I've read good things about them in several places, and I'm just starting to wonder whether I'm the statistically necessary unlucky person. Since I'm upgrading now to a GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB card, should I go with Leadtek again?

I`ve been using my Leadtek GF2 Ti for over a year now,it`s been rock solid in gaming with Nvidia drivers and I`m very happy with the image quality, would I buy a Leadtek again? 100% yes, infact when I buy my next Nvidia card Leadtek will be at the top ;).

Btw the answer is yes to your last qestion .

Ok, I determined it is the monitor as I hooked it up to another rig and have the same anomolies. Sony is going to send me a replacement with equal features if the GDM400PS (have now) is not available. I was still under warranty.

Anyone have any experience with Sony RMA replacements? They said it may be refurbished and will probably be a later model (it would be cool if I got an FD!!). Can I expect the same features and more? The one thing I love about my monitor is the dual inputs. Makes working on family and friend's rigs very easy.

Thanks to everyone with all the input so far.

I was looking at the A250 MyVIVO and the A280 My VIVO, BUT they only support 800x600 tv out.
The non VI (video in) versions which use a different chip do support 1024x768 which is what I'm looking for.

I was also looking at the MSI G4Ti4200 VPT-128, but I think that is the same deal.

My next choice is XFX PVT25ANC which is suppose to support 1024x768 with VIVO according to a e-mail from XFX, but I haven't had it confirmed yet.

I have stayed away from ATI because of the driver issues, but I don't know if that is still true. I beleive the 9500Pro would be what I would be looking for, but the output is unknown,

Of course none of this would be if the manufactures would spec this in their literature, but I guess they are only interested in the PC resolution. Anything else is just a frill.

Can someone confirm/deny any of this?
