i've been looking at cards to "hold me over" until new games (hl2, doom3, etc) and new-gen cards. i've read that these cards still provide good framerates withough aa/ff enabled.. can anyone with these cards verfiy? i'd be willing to sacrifice aa/ff to have playable rates and not spend so much $ (newegg has a 64mb ti4200 for $100)

you can easily find 128 meg 4200's for 100 bucks if you look around. most new 4200's will hit 4600 speeds.

My ti4200 is fine for the games I play right now. And don't bother getting a ti4600 unless you get it for cheap, as most ti4200's will get close to those speeds. Btw, $100 for a 64mb ti4200 is wayyy high. Somebody had a link for a 128mb one for $90 or something

edit: link

I am also looking to get 4200 as adams828 but i cant decide which one.
Do you guys know if this leadtek card in the link has 128mb ram at 444mhz or 512mhz?

Also i searched around for 4200 on pricewatch i found these:

LEADTEK GeFORCE4 TI4200 4X AGP 64MB OEM - $70
MSI-8879-G4Ti4200-T64 - $73.95
Gainward GeForce4 4200 64mb PowerPack! Ultra/650 - $79
haintech nVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 8x (64 MB DDR) (Retail) - $82

Now i have 2.6@3.06 and Radeon 8500 that i can probably sell for $40 US and get one of these for extra $40 you guys think its worth it? I mean i'd probably get a 20-30% increase in games without AA/AF for mere $40/50 extra.

Now i think all these are 250/512 mhz and I have no idea which one is a decent overclocker I tried to find some reviews on the net for some of them and Gainward hit 285/560 stable, MSI did 292/586, Leadteck somewhere I found 282/558 and some other website 302/620. Any of these you would recommend?

The 128mb ti4200's with agp8x are clocked higher, with the ram at 513mhz. All 64mb ti4200's have 513mhz ram.

Try and find yourself an Asus V9280S2-TVD-128
http://www.scorptec.com.au/index.php?prdid=00006198

Priced like a 4200, performs better than a 4400 out of the box, and is virtually guaranteed to do 4600 speeds or better (mine is clocked at 320/680 not a problem). VIVO thrown in for good measure, what more could you want?

You can use moderate 2x AA/QCX AA & 2x aniso with this card and the 53.03 drivers pretty comfortably in most games between 1152x864 and 1280x960.

Gstanfor: That Ti4200 you linked is $260... For that much money you'd be better off with an FX5900NU for $225 from eVGA or Albatron. :/

Yes, Australian pricing.

Down here the only really affordable GF-FX's are the 5700's and the 5600's. I don't like the fact that these have only one TMU per pixel pipe and I'm not keen on "Brilinear" replacing Trilinear filtering either (If Brilinear were to replace Bilinear I would not mind at all).

We'll see what next year and NV40 brings. For now I'll stick with tried and true tech.

I'd recommend Asus if you can get one with DEFINITE samsung RAM chips as those FLY on OC's, or visiontek ti4600 cards. I hit 335/750 easy, stock air cooling, on my vt ti4600.

If you can find a 9800nonpro you'd be better off-or a 9600xt.

My air cooled 9800np can do 450/822 before artifacting with a stock cooler.

Yeah but the exchange rate between an australian dollar and canadian dollar for me is 1.02 to 1.00 that means its about 254 Cdn for me thats pretty steep for a stop gap card to hold me off.

Also we are talking about $70-80 Geforce 4 cards so i cant buy a 9600XT or a 9800np since they are about 160US and 220 respectively

The only reason i decided to upgrade is because i will sell my radeon 8500 for 40 so geforce 4 will cost me 40 extra for like 20% improvement in intensive games.

Whereas with 9600pro/xt/9700pro, etc. we are looking at at least 100+ extra US. I think the current fastest cards are at their limit running the latest intensive games like Splinter Cell, Need for Speed underground, Call of Duty at 1600x1200 with 4AA/8AF and thats why i am waiting for the new generation in spring and I have already put away $100US away towards that new card. The problem is that when they come out in march or april i am gonna hae to wait 2 months until they drop a bit to 250-300US then i'd get them and basically if this takes me 6-8 months i cant think of anything to hold me off better for cheap than a geforce4 4200 unless u guys think i should sell the radeon 8500 and put those 40 bucks towards the new card right before i buy it.

Actually with the newer drivers the 8500 128mb and 4600 are basically dead even. I would not recomend spending even $40 for a near non-existant gain in performance, unless of course you have a 64mb 8500, then by all means get a 4600/4400/4200. In some games the 4600 wins, in others the 8500 wins. Hardocp has an excelent review of the Asus 9800xt that compares it to a 4600 and a 8500. http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTUy

if ur from aus, avoid ASUS V9280 VS (video suite Ti4200) they SUCK!

its not the performance but the reliability. i've got it... RMA'd 3 times cause of dodgy fan. right now i have given up and just took off the big ass heatsink and replaced with it TT G4 cooler. AVOID that card!

The V9280 VS is based off of a normal (smaller, less pcb layers) 4200 PCB. The V9280S2-TVD-128 is based off of a 4600 PCB it is larger and has more layers which allows for more speed.

The only thing the two cards have in common is the V9280 portion of their names.

I've got a Ti 4200 (Abit Siluro OTES) 64mb. I get good frame rates and hardily recommend it. I think it's one of the best cards to get to hold you over till next year when DoomIII comes out. That's when I plan to upgrade mine. Good Luck

why does it seem like all the ti4200s from reliable retailers are still relatively expensive? :frown:

My old 8500 with pre cats was just as good a card as my msi g4ti4400 and gainward ti4200 (all three were overclocked but with my 8500 running 325/300-it was an easy choice-I sold the G4s).

I like to use aa and af and with these enabled the G4s Choked.
