There is a couple of these on the for sale forums. A brand new VT Ti200 and a used 8500 64MB retail built by ATi version. Both for around $70. Which is better is I don't game too much but occasional only? They both have tv-out i think, so which has better tv-out and 2-D quality? Thanks.

I will be using this with a XP 1700+ and 8RDA+ mobo.

although i favor ATI, In your case, go with the ti4200, it is generally faster in the majority of games.

The Radeon 8500 is faster than the Ti200, by a pretty decent margin to boot.

In order from slower -> faster, you would have the GeForce 3 series -> Radeon 8500 (even LE's) -> Ti4200

the geforce3 will overclock better and will have better overall compatibility with games.

the r8500 will perform better, even against an overclocked ti200, and will have much better 2d and tv-out. hope this helps.

personally if i was running at 1280x1024 or lower i would go for the gf3. better drivers and compatibility.

but if you mainly want 2d, go for ati.

The 8500 will cream the Ti200 in 3D gaming performance, especially at high resolutions combined with anisotropic filtering.

I'd go for the 8500 too.. I have a 128MB Ti200 in one of my PC's and when overclocked it performs fairly admirably.. but the 8500 is nicer.

Thanks for all feedback. Leaning towards radeon. Also, would I see much of a performance hit if I buy a new 64MB 8500LE at newegg for $72 instead of the regular 64MB 8500?

Actually, with the latest drivers, the regular 8500 is really close to a stock Ti4200 (within 10%, sometimes even), and yes, it is significantly faster than a Ge3Ti200. It is also fully DX8 compatible.

I don't think that many people report ATI driver problems these days. If you have more than one computer (and everybody does, right?), it might be a good idea to alternate ATI/Nvidia video cards so that the second computer always has the other brand for the rare game that needs it.

ATI generally has better video and TV-out quality.

I have the both the retail Radeon 8500 and regular GeForce3 (o/c'd to ti500 levels). If I had to choose one, it would be the R8500, although it wasn't always so clear cut for me (early R8500 drivers really sucked).

I don't think that many people report ATI driver problems these days.

As an 8500 owner since last January, I have CONSTANTLY had driver issues with my card. It took until now for me to have properly working hardware-accelerated DVD playback. Even with the Catalyst 3.0 set, I still can't run NFSHP2.

Despite all this, it is a very fast card with incredible image quality in both 2d and 3d. The only Nvidia card that I have owned was a GF2 GTS, and I never found a single game that couldn't run on it. This may also be true for an 8500 that is bought today, but you need to keep in mind that most of today's games were programmed with Nvidia cards in mind.

Maybe you should just flip a coin :)

I had problem with NFSHP2 but if I left the video setting to default except brightness NFSHP2 will run flawlessly. If I add the world and quality setting to near max or max then I got the problem again.

8500 would slaughter a Ti 200. You'd have to hope to squeeze Ti 500 performance via overclocking a Ti 200 in order to even think about competing with an 8500. Not worth the risk, especially when you could also overclock the 8500.
