when I enter the expression 7.4/2pi I get 11.6
when I enter the expression 7.4/(2pi) I get 1.2 (which is the correct answer)

wtf? doesn't multiplication come before division in the order of ops? why doesn't it get 1.2 when I enter w/o parentheses?

multiply and divide are equivalent in the order of operations. whichever comes first is the one done first.

Multiplication and division are in the same order of operations category. It goes left to right, so the first one is doing (7.4/pi)*2. The second is 7.4/(2*pi).

dude, multiplication and division are on the same tier in order of ops, therefore it works left to right.

Order of operations

The first divides 7.4 by two then multiplies by pi

the bottom takes 7.4 divided by 2pi

Because multiplication and division are treated the same. So, it does 7.4/2*pi=3.7*pi=11.6.

hm wow I wonder how many wrong answers it's given me because I didn't use parentheses and I was too lazy to do a rough check in my head

Me and the TI-83+ think the same way. When I see 4/3X I think (4/3)X not (4/(3X)). Stop being lazy with the parentheses.

i'm not so much disappointed as for the fact that he's pissed that it wasn't doing it 'right', but rather for the fact that he didn't know why. Unless you're 13 and in the 8th grade, there is no excuse to not know order of operations.

Hmmmm -- ALWAYS have an idea for what the answer is before you touch the calculator. I stress this to my kids. It just does what it's programmed to do -- and if you key in something wrong, if you don't know how it works (like this example), etc... , it'll do just *EXACTLY* what you tell it to do.

Another hint for "story problems" -- always work with your units (feet, gallons, etc.) If your answer doesn't give you the right units, your number is *WRONG*

Or, how many problems you have gotten wrong because you gave it the wrong data to calculate?
