Question Thunderbolt technology

Does Thunderbolt only help in increasing speed of data storage type transfers or
does it also help increase speed in other aspect of computer operations, i.e.
launching, loading and running applications, boot speed, etc., etc. ?

It allows for multiplexing of PCIE and Displayport interfaces. So it just offers for faster connection between devices along with video output. The launching, loading and running of apps is dependent on storage, memory and the processor. Thurnderbolt allows for those components to have a quicker path to those components and not through a USB controller.
