Thunderbolt Add-in card connects to Display Port

Hi,

I been looking at the new Thunderbolt Add-In cards for the newer motherboards. I'm a little confused on why it has to be connected to a display port on your video card if you are just going to use it for storage. Is it going to slow down the video card down at all? Thanks.
