Thunderbird question

I've recently started moving myself away from MS as much as possible. To do this I ditched MS Office for Open Office. To my surprise, Open Office is actually really good (way better than it was a few years back as Staroffice). But I needed a good e-mail app.

I despise Outlook express, so I am using Mozilla Thunderbird. So far it is great (it can even check hotmail/gmail/etc...). However, one thing is driving me nuts. When replying to an e-mail the app always puts my response (by default) at the end/bottom of the message (after the quoted message). So I have to manually move to the top of the message before entering my reply (yes, I know, "Wah Wah poor me").

Does anyone know the setting (simple or complex) to get Thunderbird to behave like 99% of email applications, and put my response at the top?

Thanks.

Careful, we've had big arguments about the merits of top- vs. bottom-quoting! :p

Anyway, here's the first thing I found. Don't know if there's anything easier but I didn't see it while poking around in Preferences. I imagine it'd be largely the same on windows.

Thanks for that. That fix worked perfectly. With Windows it was:

Tools => Options => Advanced => Config Editor

Then changing:

mail.identity.default.reply_on_top to an integer value of "1" for on top. The default valuewas "0".

As for above or below quotes, I really don't care. But, since most people I deal with use MS products which always reply above quotes, I had to find a fix. If I mistakenly reply below quotes few (if any) of them have the sense to scroll down to look for my response.

Which is really sad because it's a lot harder to follow the converstaion when it flows upwards.

Yeah, this is bad form, which is why TBird has the default configuration it does. I hope you never send anything to technical mailing lists, because I've seen people get torched for this straight off.

Agreed. But, once someone sets a standard (ie Microsoft) it suddenly becomes the "expected format". My problem is I am getting criticized for replying without commenting, for the simple reason that the recipient is unaware of the "scroll" function.

Yeah, I know, burn the fool at the stake. But lets face it, most users are dumb so if I need to dumb things down to talk to them, I will. At least Thunderbird has the option (though hidden) to do things either way. Typically, I adhere to the expected format when it comes to communications. I blame all of this on text messaging and blackberries. People got lazy, and scrolling suddenyl became a pain in the a s s.
