Thunderbird not working right in Windows 8

I just helped a family member get his new Windows 8 computer set up. He came from XP and was using Outlook Express for his emails. I backed up all the emails. Well, I got Thunderbird installed on the Win 8 machine and it automatically picked up 400 emails. It seemed to be working fine. I went ahead and imported the files I had backed up and it seems ever since then, Thunderbird is not working right, it is almost unusable.

It will open up, check for emails but it will keep hanging up for several seconds. It will keep doing that over and over.

Can you test it under a different user profile? Maybe the profile is somehow corrupt?

Did you already try uninstalling/reinstalling?

Anything strange in the event viewer?

I have reinstalled it and didn't change. I checked the event viewer and nothing that looks like it is related to thunderbird.

It seems the problem started after I import the emails I had backed up from Outlook Express. When it imported them, it made separate folders for those emails. I tried to merge them with the thunderbird inbox and it was taking forever and I kept getting messages about the continuing to run the script on the page.

I think I got it figured out. Mcafee AV was causing it to freeze for whatever reason. I uninstalled Mcafee and now use Windows Defender that came with Windows. So far it seems to be working just fine. Is there a better choice for an AV besides Windows Defender? He also uses MBAM.

Oh.. well there are a lot of better AV programs such as NOD32 and Kaspersky. Check out the AV Comparatives website to see which rate the best.

Which website is that?

How is Windows Defender that came with Windows? The biggest thing he does is emails along with surfing the web.
