You embed sounds into emails you send...wow, I remember that being popular in the late '90's. I'm the total opposite...mine go out default in plain text 🙂

Right! The tunes go with a themed animated GIF. Not all emails, mind you, but a daily missive to a select group. It's sort of a private blog with no public risk or exposure.

So, I had played with Thunderbird forever ago, wasn't a fan.

But now I am once again interested, and with the interest of having everything in one place, and yet perfectly separate as well (I had some email forwarded to my main gmail account)... and well, downloaded Thunderbird 3.1, and so far with the Windows Office 2007 theme I am really liking this mail package.

I will soon be grabbing the one add-on for cross-support with Google Calendar (so I can view, AND add/remove events, and see it all accurately on my Android phone as well), and I think having that all in one tidy program will be a huge boon.
Working to get my AKO (army portal/email) in the app as well, supposed to be pain free, but AKO is retarded beyond belief, website is fucking up for me right now.

Anyhow...

Is there a System Tray (Windows 7) notifier out there, that stays in the tray, showing an icon for new mail, or no new mail?

So far, I've seen a few notifications of new mail, but they disappear, and if I wasn't looking at the screen, I wouldn't know unless I went back to the window. I want to have Thunderbird closed unless I know I have mail to view.

Tbird should keep the mail notification up until you view your new mail. I've never seen it close before that event. This addon will minimize it to tray instead of taskbar...

Turns out you were right.
I just had to go into my system tray settings and change the Thunderbird setting to Show Icon and Notifications. The tray icon only shows with new messages, and I have now seen it appear in the tray when I had a message.

Regardless, it looks to require Thunderbird is open at all times. Windows 7's task bar is awesome in that it doesn't take up any more space if the program is open, at least, if the program is pinned to the bar. Minimizing to system tray, in Windows 7, is kind of counter-productive, in comparison to previous OS versions.

One reason I have always loved desktop docks. 🙂
And Microsoft made a better dock than all the docks available for Windows thus far, with the new taskbar.

So far, it does appear to have a small memory footprint so keeping it open won't be a problem.

I had bad experience with Tbird. Now using opera mail which I find quite good compared to Tbird. Is there anything new with it that can change my mind to switch over to Tbird?

What bad experience? Tbird's had tabbed email for awhile now. I guess that's a feature. It fetches and sends email quickly and efficiently. I don't know what other features people want in a mail client.

I just wish Opera Mail had a LDAP client.
