Thunderbird 1.3 gets delayed...GRRRRRRR

Check out this article at ebn.

It seems ridiculous to me that AMD would hold the 1.3 and 1.33 Thunderbirds back because they feel the 1.2 is already enough competition for the Pentium 4.

The only redeeming part of this article was the following quote:

<< Ruiz did present an updated AMD roadmap that showed its next generation Palomino MPU with clock rates greater than 1.2-GHz will enter production for desktops and mobile this quarter. >>

I was waiting on the 1.33 for my next rig but now it looks like I'll be waiting until the Palomino comes out.

My local dealer still says the 27th or 28th. If AMD doesn't release it, I'll go with a 1.5Ghz P4 just out of spite!

Why does it seem ridiculous? Just read the reviews. It is very true. AMD does not have to rush anything right now, as the P4 is not the beast today that it will be in the future.

AMD could release the 1.33 at a premium and sell it for a greater profit than they currently make on the 1.2. It's not as if everyone is going to buy a 1.2 knowing that the 1.33 is waiting in the wings.

antiABIT... So, what would be the benefit to delaying the launch of that cpu?

More LIkely they are trying to get the CPU wattage within reasonable limits before releaseing the chip, ie waiting for palamino. A 1300Mhz T_bird is around 70W, and with the stock taisol heatsink that means a core temp roughly 35C over ambient. Considering that the average case varies from 30-40C in temp, that would mean a cpu around 65 to 75C range. Within operating margins, yes. WOuld it be wiser to wait for a cooler running chip? probably.

There do seem some places that already have them for sale.

Just an example isquared

Try a search at pricewatch for AMD 1.3 and AMD 1.33, seems to be listed at quite a few places with some saying in stock.

I think this was a fake by AMD to churn more sales on the 1.2...looks like the 1.3 and 1.33 will be coming out within the next week or so and probably not on the Palomino (wish it were otherwise).

Actually they had already release the 1.3 cpu. It is marketed under different names such as 1 gig, or 1.1 gig or 1.2..(Ask compuwiz about it :))

Wierdest thing was shopping today for a chip to replace my Duron (my own dumb@ass fault for chipping it), and I seen a 1.3 for sale. Went so many places not sure where I seen it. Think what the people that ordered it are gonna think, having to wait indefinately.

It's on sale already at a number of sites...but it won't be an indefinite wait I think they'll be announced officially at CEbit this week.
