I'm the HW Tech for a mid-size company, and i'm freaking tired of buying expensive crap from Compaq and Dell, so for our NT boxes I started to build them. Here's what I've run into. Two identical Antec full-size tower cases, same PSU, same everything but the MoBo. I've got the K7 with twin AMD MP 1900+, and the CPU's are runnign around 77C :Q however, the Asus board has two MP 1600+'s and she's running at 55C. Same Thermaltake Volcano 6's and i just can't tell if the K7(which is huge!!) is generating that much more heat or what. I haven't thought or had time to pursue the more esoteric possibilities. I was going to check my Vcore Monday... any thoughts?

Could be they're measuring the CPU temperature in two different ways. To borrow a little from an analogy by Arctic Silver's nevin: if you had two different brands of ovens, you could not realistically expect to tell which oven is hotter inside by simply feeling the outside, or even making precision measurements of the outside. Different construction methods with different brands of ovens, and different methods of sensing CPU temperature with different motherboards, are going to make it an apples-and-oranges comparison.

Is the Tyan experiencing any instability problems? Also just curious if the cases are the SX1240 model, which has a great ventilation setup for a system like that.

Different mobo reads temp differently. At 77C...f/load ?

Anyway, 77C seems a bit too much even for myself. U might wanna take a look at the HSF seating & the level of thermal compound on those unit. Even Asus mobo only reads 55C....

The tyan has been a bit flaky; the system locks up when i try to use EC, ECC, or ECC w/ scrub. I relalize it should take a few minutes to do it's memory check, but...
Also, I did flash the bios to the newest version for the board and things seem happier. I'd say I'll just put on a better h/s, but there is no space on those boards, in case you haven't seen one. I ordered some Arctic Silver, and I'll let you know how it turns out. I want it in the 50's as well if I can.

What kind of ambient case temps in the two different setups?

I'm personally more inclined to trust the A7M-266D, since it has known diode support.

low 40's Celsius on both(I think 42 for the Asus, and 44 for the Tyan). I worked on the Tyan some today and it's been stable as all get out... AND the temperature has come down to the mid-50's. Very curious. It's a temperature controlled area, so i can't say environmentals played a factor. i don't know where that drop happened.
