Thumbs up to the Google AdWords ads on AT forums

I'm no longer a subscriber as I didn't really need the full-text searching nor the 1000PM limit. Plus, the non-subscriber forums are plenty fast now.

But I just noticed that the ads now seem to be pulling up the text-based ads from the Google AdWords network. I know Google recently expanded this service to include distribution on other sites besides its search partners. So is it safe to assume Anandtech is a part of this network now? It'll be interesting to see how the ads are implemented (i.e., if there's a thread on memory will it post memory ads, while if there's a thread on cars it'll post car ads?) Not sure how the functionality will work in a forum, but either way it's a definite improvement. Thanks for the change.

It's a text-based advertising system used on Google (the ads you see at a search on Google - they're also distributed in searches on AOL and other Google partners.) I've used them in the past both as an advertiser and a searcher and found them very useful at times.

VERY cool! They DO appear to change the ads based on the text of the thread.

Yeah, it's actually pretty fun to see what thread spawns what ads.
For instance in the Poll about "Are bumpers made for bumping?" it comes up with ads for extended auto warranties! hahaha

Yeah, I was just responding to your thread in the Forum Issues forum. I didn't see it at the time. Plus it probably wouldn't hurt to have a thread about it here since this is one of the most active forums and this is a pretty major change worthy of noting to a broader audience IMO.

The speeding ticket threat returns ads for services to beat photo-radar! I think it's hilarious.

Without neffing the forums (and if you look at my post count and origin date you'll see I'm not exactly a nef), I'm trying to figure out how it works exactly. I'm wondering if it bases the ads based on the text from the originator only or if it accounts for the copy written by respondents? So far, that looks to be the case. Just to test . . .

Just a guess, but it LOOKS like it bases the ads off the originator's ID, title and thread copy only.

That makes the most sense because if it had to recalculate ads for a thread EVERY time somebody posted something it would probably consume a LOT of resources.

I wonder what company does that? Or does AT do it on its own?
Like I said in the original post. It's Google AdWords. I checked a couple of the listings with the ad listings that pull up in Google searches. They're one in the same.
