Throwing away a CRT monitor

I read you aren't supposed to throw CRT monitors/tv's away in the trash due to toxic stuff that can leak out when its crushed and thrown in a landfill. So I've had this 17" monitor sitting in my house for half a year now and I'm tired of it laying around. I have yet to find any way to get rid of it without paying someone to take it (and even then I haven't found any of those either really, just searching online and there is always a fee associated). I read that sometimes places have free computer recycling days and such, but I have yet to see one around here. It actually still works, just really old and has color bleeding problems, but despite some ads saying I'll give it away for free, nobody has wanted it.

So what do the rest of you do when your crt stuff breaks? Seems ridiculously complicated/hasslesome to dispose of this stuff properly.

Drive to a dumpy neighborhood and toss it out of your car. Now it is someone elses problem.

check your counties web site and see if they have a disposal option via the county (either through the land fill or something)

otherwise, drive out to the country/rural area about 3 am and maybe it would accidently fall off your truck if you forgot to strap it down or something

I called my local municipal office and they told me to leave it outside on a certain day and they picked it up.

you could also try
Freecycle

There is no reason to throw away perfectly functioning or usable items (assuming it still works).

I've never had goodwill charge me for items, had them turn me away for some items, but never charge. It's a donation.

You're guaranteed to find some packrat on Freecycle who wants it.

My girlfriend lives in Philly. Whenever we want to get rid of something, we just put it on the porch and someone will steal it. Seriously.

I put all my old computer crap on the sidewalk in front of my house. You would be surprised at the junk people actually take.

I just take it out to the desert and shoot it with a high powered rifle...and multiple handguns...and maybe a few blasts from a shotgun.

But that's just me. :D

Well I posted on craigslist and got no responses. I posted on Freecycle and got 1 response, but it was some lady who didn't have a car and I didn't feel like driving 40 minutes each way to deliver a free monitor to her.
Don't see anything on my county website, other than that Dell had a computer recycling day here in 2003 which generated 58 tons of stuff, not that it does me much good now.
I'll give craigslist and freecycle another shot.
Apparently there is a Goodwill Computer Store in my city, so I guess I can go there as a last resort, although I'd hate to be the sucker that buys it thinking it works perfectly unless the store is set up so you can test them out first.

I would give both Craiglist and Freecycle more time. It's only been ~2 hours if I'm not mistaken?
