I recently ran a scandisk on my 15 gig. HD and it managed to take almost 24 hrs!! This followed my 16 hr. reformatting party... Is there anything besides a HD meltdown that could explain these events?? To give you more information, the reason why I reformatted in the first place was because the computer was running extremely choppy, and it that was becoming excessively annoying. I immediately purchased another 256 MB of ram, but that didn't change all that much, for my computer still did not like graphic intense programs.

I am 85% certain that it is the HD, but the only other possible piece of hardware that I could see causing any issues would be the video card.

System Specs:
P-3 733
15 gig. HD
Plextor 12X cd-rw
ASUS P3V4X MB
512 MB RAM
ASUS GE-Force II

Any info. would be appretiated.

Who makes your HD? IBM has a drive fitness test you can download, maybe it works with non-IBM HD's as well.

It doesn't sound like it's your case, but it can't hurt to take a look. Check out my suggestion on this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=719342

This person was experiencing lag.

I will check this out when I get home from work, but is it possible that the HD would just randomely switch from UDMA?? I didn't make any changes with the computer...it was fine one day, and then began to run choppy the next.

The only thing I can think of is you have a buttload of bad sectors, you should try to RMA the hard drive if its still under warranty, most retail drives have a 3 year warranty

If this were the case wouldn't the scandisk have picked them up??? It gave my drive a clean bill of health.
