Three of my colleagues were just diagnosed with cancer.

Seems odd for this to happen all at once, but three of my colleagues (two of which are personal friends, and all of which I respect very much) were recently diagnosed with cancer. One is battling leukemia and is already going through chemo. He's very optimistic and doing quite well. Another simply went to the doctor after taking a spill off a ladder, and in so doing they found tumors all over his spine. He's just now starting chemo, and it doesn't look too good. Finally, another just had a biopsy of his pancreas that was identified as cancer.

These are all men, all very healthy, thin, fit people. All are under 40 as well.

If that wasn't enough, one of my best friends had a heart attack a month or so ago. We also work together.

Seeing the strength in which these guys are facing their battles has been something of an inspiration to me. I just wanted to post this somewhere. It certainly gives me a greater appreciation for being in overall good health. Take care of yourself ATOT......

Are they Ohio based co-workers?

Edit: This sounded harsher than I intended. I do hope your colleagues & friend come through their trials ok. I just asked because I remember growing up that people always talked about higher than average instances of cancer in parts of Ohio (my mom, in fact had supplemental cancer insurance).

give us some more information...

are you guys working in a nuclear power plant or near a chemical plant or something?

I hope and pray that they all come out of their "battles" successfully with a great apprication for life.
Cancer and really any sickness will not only change the person fighting the disease, but those around them too.
Be there for them in anyways you can, even if its just to drop of some soup or a card or something when they are sick from chemo. It will mean more than you will ever know to them.

We're all in software. The man that had the heart attack is my business partner and great friend. Another is a director of IT in a big four accounting firm. One is a consultant with Microsoft Consulting Services, and the one with leukemia owns a consulting firm in the area. The work can be incredibly stressful (often 80+ hour weeks, although not lately), but there's otherwise no correlation between these occurrences.

Thanks, I'll do that...

Wow, that is terrible.

Good luck to your colleagues-friends.
Hopefully they all fight winning battles.

If they don't, make sure they at least make the best out of the coming times.

While this may just all be an unfortunate coincidence, you might want to look into environmental factors. I assume you all live near each other, given that several are personal friends. And if it's not too intrusive, find out if their families have a history of cancer/heart disease. I'd be very suspicious if there was no history.

Well, I can't speak for those with cancer (probably not a good thing to ask at this time), but my friend with the heart attack has no history of it in his family. The doctor related it to his poor eating habits through much of his youth.

We're all in the Atlanta area, but most live out in the suburbs.

The dean of my college recently died from pancreatic cancer (one of the worst types). Apparently he found out about it just 2 months ago. That's how quickly your life can end.

2 months is an eternity. Your life can end much quicker than that.

Just found out last night that a friend has prostate cancer. He is working in Iraq atm and he doesn't even know the results of his lab yet. He was NBC in the military so who knows what hes had in his system.

there have been 3 people in the last 6 years at my work that have had brain tumors. I am hoping it is not something at work causing them.
