This reminds me of a cat owner intentionally inbreeding cats until she got a breed that had very stunted front arms and it had to jump like a kangaroo to get around.

Although this is really sad animals are very resilient. They look healthy and I have a feeling you are going to see three pups that learn how to walk on 2 hind legs. They are cute. I don't even like that breed but I would take one to give it a good home. I have had a three legged dog and a three legged squirrel. They didn't even know they had a handicap.

So, resources are spent keeping these particular 3 puppies alive, because of their unique genetic defect. Meanwhile, 1000's more of perfectly healthy, normal puppies are put to sleep because they can't find someone to adopt them.

Backyard breeder probably sold the 2 normal puppies and just wanted the SPCA to put the other three to sleep (for free.) Kinda sad. It's a really tough call, but apparently, they're having trouble finding someone who will go through all the trouble to care for them. They're already being paraded around in the media as sideshow freaks. I'm sure my viewpoint sounds callous, but sometimes, tough choices have to be made. As long as we're putting unwanted animals to sleep, rather than keeping them alive indefinitely until a good home is found, it seems (at least to me) that these three should have been put down as well.

Your only seeing one side if it. My wife works in a vet clinic and has been doing animal rescue for over 15 years. Its not so much about health as adoptability. Ive seen dogs come through with massive health problems and get adopted in a day while perfectly healthy dogs with an odd coloring will sit for a year in a kennnel ( we have one that weve decided to keep because she has a huge growth on her head and no wants her ).

Dogs with 2 legs can have a relatively normal life. More than likey they will learn to walk on 2 legs until they are old, then get wheels.

I didn't read the article, but
This is what happens when backyard breeders keep on breeding when the females are obviously too old.

absolutely reeks of ignorance & stuidity.

Old age does not necessarily cause the genes in an egg to break down. The mother being old was not the reason the puppies were born with no front legs.

Edit: I do agree with your sentiment, though. Puppy mills are generally not a good thing.

Futurama comes to mind.
"Homeless robots too poor to afford even the basic alcohol they
need fuel their circuits. Is there anything sadder?
Only drowning puppies, and there have to be a lot of them."

I guess legless puppies are a bit better than that.

I think the media is withholding the real truth. The news report claims the breeder sent them to this place because he/she didn't have the resources to take care of them.

BS

More like these three chihuahua's are not worth anything on the market, so I need to cop out of my responsibility as a dog breeder and come up with another excuse.

Chihuahua's range on the market from $400 - over $2000 or more...
Who wants a chihuahua or any dog without their front legs.

reminds me of that dog on Oprah that had no front legs and could walk around on it's back ones.
