Three 2560x1440 or Three 3440 x 1440 for Productivity

I am getting more and more into research and the 1200x1600 + 2560x1600 + 1200x1600 PLP triple setup has already maxed out for me. I can only have four documents open at a time right now, and I really need six.

So, I am looking at the new 27" and 28" monitors that have what I might need at prices that are pretty good, especially compared to the kilobuck I paid for the Dell U3014 that is the centerpiece of my current workstation.

Any reason I should go for three 3440x1440 monitors over three 2560x1440 monitors, or vice-versa?

Finally, will I miss the 1600 vertical pixel height advantage of the setup I now have?

I dunno about 3x UW as that is a massive amount of side-side, unless you do some kind of triangle mounting.

That said, side-side documents on 3440x1440 is amazing. Not sure how it is on 2560x1440 but I'd imagine they feel pretty squished at 1280 x 1440 vs 1720 x 1440 each.

I went from 20-30-20 like you have now to 20-34-20 and find myself wanting to replace the side 20 with 1440 but I wouldn't get 3 of them because even the single 34 with the two small side monitors is a lot of head swiveling.

Do you need all the documents up at the same time? If not you might want to check out the windows Task View to swap out the desktop windows or something similar.

3440x1440 x 3 is crazy, lol. That would be pretty good for having exactly 6 full sized documents open at once though. One 34" is perfect for two nicely sized documents side by side.

I'd just go with 3x1440p.

Quality IPS 1440p panels can be found MUCH cheaper than a quality IPS ultrawide. If you want decent color quality without spending $2.5k+, get 1440p.

I use 2x1440p and I can already easily fit two things per monitor.

Does the OP have a gpu that is capable of driving multiple monitors at those resolutions?
any GPU from the past few years should have no problem whatsoever with basic desktop usage at those resolutions, whether or not it has the appropriate number of outputs for his use I don't know, but in terms of actual GPU power, 3x1440p desktop use is a breeze and even an intel iGPU shouldnt have trouble with it assuming you have 3 displays with displayport inputs AND MST for daisy chaining.

Or he can use a dGPU for 2 of the monitors and his iGPU for the 3rd, the point is it should be easily possible.

I've never used my monitors in the way you are, but what little experience I have I can say that I believe you will miss the 1600 vertical pixel height.

Are the (almost) 4K monitors not suitable for your purposes (3840 x 2160)? They seem to start around $350.

Ah. I didn't realize you would be viewing them from the side.

Makes more sense now as to how they will fit on your desk. 😛 😀
