So I bought a Threadripper 1950X + X399 Gigabyte Designare motherboard + Vega 64 FE in 2018. The 1950x cost me about $580, motherboard about $240, Vega 64 FE about $500. The 1950x can now be had brand new on eBay for $420 or so. The Vega 64 FE new goes for about the same as the 1950X new. Motherboard may be the only thing that has held its value best.
I primarily am interested in video editing performance, virtual machines, software development, with gaming only occasionally. I do find desktop responsiveness a tad on the slow side with 1950X since it's single core performance is not its strength. Windows don't pop up instantaneously like with something like an Intel i7-8700K or the like.
My question is, given what I've already paid for my existing setup, would the gains of better 3900x single core performance, better gaming performance, and PCIE 4.0 be worth the extra expense that comes from selling my current gear to get the 3900x and x570 mobo? I wouldn't be able to sell the 1950X for $420, since people can get that new for that price. I'd have to sell it for somewhat less than that. After eBay fees and shipping cost, and the 3900X costing $499, I might be looking at $150 more to move to the 3900X from 1950X. As for motherboard, I could sell the X399 Designare but after fees and shipping, I could be looking at still paying around $60 more for a mid-range x570 mobo. So that's like $210 additional to pay to move to the new gear from the old. Is it worth it? Or would I be better off keeping the 1950X and X399 mobo, using it maybe for server purposes down the road and living with the performance?
Also, similar question for Vega 64 FE. Would it be better just to keep it or look at getting Radeon VII?
