Can we start getting some temp-bans and locks for this? mainly temp bans. Locks seem to satisfy the offender. 😛

Really. Its getting annoying, esp in offtopic.

nothing wrong...people will get over it. Its called "being excited about a working search".

I must say I was actually taken in by that thread about the dog and squirrl till I noticed that it occured almost 9 years ago lol

It is bannable (well, at least if you've been doing enough other bad stuff). Report it, and it will be dealt with.

Wait, what?
Some things are bannable for one person but not for another? Since when? 😱

It's the same way it always has been: if we have to keep warning you for something, at some point that's going to get escalated to a time out.

What's wrong with posting/reviving in an old thread?
If it's a bannable offense why not delete them... or make them so you can't post in them after a period of time (read only)?

:\

how about doing something like other forums and archiving them, thus locking them and preventing people from posting in them again.

Its ok if its being bumped for a reason.

If its being bumped for no reason at all, then it should be bannable.

Forums are here to convey information. If someones bumping a thread for no reason, they're just creating noise(old noise at that), and are no better than spammers hawking discount Nikes. Spammers get banned, so should useless necromancers....

i agree with this. i mean really someone bumped an 8 year old thread yesterday. there was nothing added to make it relevant, just did it to annoy people.

edit: it was Arkaign. why am i not surprised http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=787324

why?
Thats total BS a ban for bumping a thread...cmon thats stoopid and childish!

I disagree.

Bumping a thread so it can be further discussed or to add commentary is fine. Bumping a thread "for the lulz" adds no value and would be considered neffing by an standards I can think of.

I'm starting to sound like a grumpy old man, aren't I?

On one of my forums I had an issue where people would bump threads all the time too. They'd find it on google, register, then reply. I set it up so threads over 1 year old get "archived". It's basically the same as locked, but it shows archived.

Archived sounds like a good idea. But i think for a fast moving forum like AT it could be reduced to like 6 months.

I've done a search, found something that looks totally relevant, and accidently ressurected old threads a couple of times in my forum career.

It happens. I think intent is the key feature of this debate. Like some have said, if somebody is doing it just to be funny, well then.............

Aww come on, the guy was asking if he should wait for Prescott 🙂 At the time, nobody knew what a disaster Prescott would be, so it's pretty funny to see a thread about it. Hell I thought Prescott was gonna be awesome considering how good Northwood was, doubling the cache and lowering to 90nm, it was generally thought that we were going into the 4ghz+ range way back then! I certainly didn't dig that up to annoy anyone. Look in the thread, there were a lot of people who thought it was a funny bump because of what we know now.
