Thrashed headset cord.. Self replace?

Hey all,

Long story short, went out and bought this beautiful $170 headset with sweet directional sound and perfect clarity. Then gf decided to bring home a kitty who thought the cord would make a great chew toy. So the question is, can I replace the cord myself and how, or do I have to send in the set for a pro repair for $80(yea.. I could buy a different set for that). The cord is a... Coaxial cable? (not USB)

Not entirely sure how many wires are in the actual cable to handle all the channels and whatnot but i would THINK that if enough of the end with the plugs is retained and enough of the end with the earphones is retained, you could cut out the bad area and splice all like wires back together and cover with shrink tube for a good repair. If the wire is too short, a cheap 5 or 10 foot headphone extender from radio shack or wal mart would give you the length you desire back. Thats what I would look at doing if i just dropped 170 greenbacks on a pair of earphones.

It depends... do you just want it to work, or does it have to look like new?

Some manufacturers of higher end gear make replacement parts, so you may be able to look it up (try one of the audiophile forums).

Depends on the cable. You can patch it back together with the original cord unless it's that horrible fiberized stuff.

Otherwise, you can still do it with another headphone cord and some soldering / disassembly skills.
