Looking for a cheap solution for my Brother In-law.

ECS K7SOM + Duron 1.4 = $138 (This is a bundle at a local store)

Would I be any better off getting:
ECS K7S5A = $85 (My second choice...since I have and know this board).
MSI 6378 KLE133 = $99
MSI 6390 KM266 = $107
Asus A7V266-EAA KT266A = $112 (No Vid)
Asus A7S333-WA SiS745 = $120 (No Vid)
MSI 6380E KT3 Ultra2 KT333 = $121 (No Vid)

I was hoping for something with integrated video, but I guess I could include my old GF2MX400 and upgrade myself.

If you have any links to reviews of these boards or thoughts on the integrated video on any of them, please share.

If it's just from that list, I'd avoid ECS like the plague and get the MSI.
Newegg has the Epox 8RDA for $88, though.

Ya that's $136 CDN plus taxes or duty at the border, then I still have to get vid and CPU.

I have to come up with:

Case (Thinking SX630II @ ~$118)
Mobo
RAM (512)
CPU (>1Ghz , Duron would be OK, Athlon preferred)
HD (40GB)
Vid (GF2MX400'ish level)
Sound (Anything...he's not picky)
LAN (Anything integrated or not)

For < $500 CDN.

Ah, Canadian :) that's why those prices looked high.
Sorry, I don't know of any online retailers that are Canada friendly.

You might also look around for a deal with the Biostar M7VIG Pro. It is similarly priced with the K7S5A but has onboard video (not a great one, but hey), onboard sound, onboard LAN(if interested) and integrated USB 2.0 support, plus it accept DDR or SDRAM (not both). There may be some packages out there with a Duron/256MB starter...

I too have the K7S5A, and although a good board, it is aging and doesn't hold much for the future...IMHO

How about the ASUS A7N266-VM Athlon Nvidia 220D , has onboard everything, and is $71 (US) at newegg last I saw. I don't know where you could get that up there.

Hmmm that'd work if I could find a place that still carries or has stock on nForce 1 mobos.

Thanks,

A LOT of places still have these. The problem is, I don't know who is a good distributor that ships to Canada ! Look there. I tried, but so far, mwave, googlegear and newegg don't ship there, and I don't want to spend forever searching.

Are you talking about shoprbc? They carry it and are located in Ottawa. They'll ship anywhere. Anyway, it's not a duron 1400. It's actually a morgan duron 1.0 that they've given their own PR rating of 1400+ to. It's good. I replaced Tina's motherboard with it when hers failed and it's been fine. The processor is soldered into the socket so no upgrades. Also, the heatsink is screwed down. It supports DDR and SDram but only at 200Mhz or 100mhz oddly enough. The onboard sound is a C-media which is great. The video will steal 32MB of system memory regarless of how much you use. It's not bad for the prices though.

Ya that's where I was talking about, it's right behind where I work. However now that I know the CPU is soldered I likely won't do it, I'll have to find something else, the 100/200 bus is also an issue. If I'm going to bother putting something together for him then it has to be at least partially upgradable. Maybe I'll have to look into expanding his budget to $700. Or find other ways to save him some $, like selling him my 2 20GB drives and upgrading myself to a WD SE 80 or something.

Yeah, so you work in Bellscorners? It's still an okay deal just don't expect to upgrade it much. It also doesn't have an AGP port. RBC has the new K7s for $85 aswell.

Yes I work in Bell's Corners. I'd guess you mean the old Nortel buildings on Fitzgerald but no I don't really know.

"Yeah, the new K7s5a or whatever. It now supports USB 2.0 with the extra headers... "

Cool, didn't know there was such a thing.

No...I didn't mean nortel. I meant Compaq...formerly known as site 42/47. Used to work there. THought you still did...oh well...Make sure that you get the updated version of the K7S5a. You can tell because the new one doesn't have a gameport and instead has extra USB ports.

Oh Compaq isn't in that building anymore, though I have some friends who used to work there. (I work by the RoyalBank on Fitzgerald....litterly a 45sec walk from RBC).

Yeah, compaq is still there. (405 Robertson Rd.) They laid off all of the Consumer people and it's now a commercial call centre. It's still very active. I left before any of this happened though. Anyway, yeah, That's my bank. Small world, eh? I'll actually be heading down to RBC to buy some stuff. Actually, I'll be getting that soldered combo deal for a $300 system I'm putting together for someone. It's fine for just surfing. I'll check and see if they have the updated K7S5a's while I'm in too.

Here we go: A7N266-VM from Vibe Computers in Canada. These are excellent little guys with an AGP slot plus onboard AGP video. I put up more info about them in this Hot Deals thread.

Hmmm did they take the sign down @ Compaq? I was sure it was gone last time I was past which made me assume it wasn't there anymore.
