Thoughts on Win7 Ultimate.

I bought Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit today. It was nearly the same price as the home premium would have been from Newegg. I guess I didn't want to have the memory limitation from Hm Prem. and would like to try the bitlocker drive encryption. For those of you that are using ultimate, what are your impressions?

Prolly wouldn't get another Ultimate and indeed recently opted for Professional (likewise at lower than normal price of Premium). No harm if around the same price though besides perhaps consuming more space by default? BitLocker was an attraction but prefer OS independent TrueCrypt.

The 16GB limit is too restrictive for you?

That's what I'm going to have in this box from jump, 4 of the 4 gig sticks. I guess I don't like the notion of buying it already maxed out in software. I plan to turn off the paging file and let her rip.

Do not get sidetrack by conventional Enthusiasts "Mambo Jambo". :hmm:

Ultimate can do more than premium (XP-Mode is one example).

There is No drawback as compare to premium, if you also got it for good price, then you did good.

Uhh, no one thought there was. Also, "Ultimate" always supersedes other descriptors by its very definition. That's why people laughed when the "Terminator 2: Judgment Day Extreme Edition" DVD came out after "T2: Ultimate." They ran pout of things to call it! Like after Half Life Gold and "Half Life Platinum" boxes, they made "Half Life Platinum v2.0."

As a TechNet subscriber, all versions cost me the same, so I always get the best. Ultimate has excellent networking capabilities, as does Professional. They both have XP Mode VM. Ultimate has better Aero than Pro.

for an explanation of what each version has or doesn't have check out this link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/compare

MS gave me ultimate for hosting a launch event party. Works fine for me, although I haven't experienced any of the other versions.

Why would you want to turn off the paging file?

Why would you want to turn off the paging file?

Because there's little to no reason to leave it on when you have an ungodly sum of RAM. (If I'm not mistaken turning it off may increase performance as long as you don't run out of RAM.)

Why do we need to have this same conversation every 3 months in the OS forum?

For the same reason that you can Not put two posts (as above) into one post (like this).

Uh, what?

Why do we need to have this same conversation every 3 months in the OS forum?

Even when enabled, the paging file is only used when you need it. Turning it off=crash.

Do you take the airbags out of your car in order to make it lighter too?

corkyg, perhaps you were thinking of Aero Glass Remoting which is exclusive to Enterprise/Ultimate? Third-party sites offer much more extensive comparison lists than that Microsoft one.

As for pagefile size, it can be set to some minimal fixed amount such as 500MB for dodgy old apps that require one but otherwise the functional minimum of 16MB.

That is a stupid taboo. Many people are posting from mobile devices that are troublesome enough to even reply to two posts to begin with. Remember when iPhone OS/iOS didn't have copy/paste?
