The general position on weight training is typically allowing some days of rest in between training the same body parts. There is of course much evidence to support that this is a proven way to make gains.

However I am curious what long term benefits there can be had from training the same body parts on a more consistent basis, such as every day or every other day. You might wonder, why would anyone want to do that? Basically my thought process behind this is looking certain types of athletes and people who work an occupation that requires heavy lifting. For example gymnasts tend to train nearly everyday using lots of upper body strength and movement, for many of them they have very strong and sculpted physiques. Also certain type of construction workers or other jobs that require moving heavy weight, I have seen people in that field with fairly impressive builds.

So could there be benefits in training more frequently than 1 or 2 a week?

I don't do isolation training but I at the same time, I don't see a problem with every other day. I would imagine that you would be limiting gains going everyday...I don't think that gives enough recovery time and you will end up lowering weights or reps or both on the second day.

i can tell you for years while i was in college, i was training 6 days a week, each muscle group 2x a week. this lasted like 4-5 years and i could never really get huge but always just stayed cut and ripped. but i never could really bulk up.

after talking to a buddy of mine who was a trainer and telling him my situation and what i do, he simply said that i was overtraining and to cut back, do each muscle group once a week and get more rest.

ever since changing to that i have never had problem putting size on and getting stronger. so from my personal experience, i would say that is too much.

I echo the above post. I've always been of the mindset that if you can train a muscle group more than once in a week, then you're not training it intensely enough the first time.

You probably have to factor in you were probably eating better post college? Your metabolism slowing down?

It's more of a function of how much can you rest if you are training 6days a week and how much you can eat. But for most 3-4x a week is PLENTY of training.

I was doing upper body 3-4x a week last year with my brother in law. After a couple weeks my shoulders were getting so big so fast that I had scary stretch marks on both of my shoulders.

There was 4 or 5 6inch long marks that looked like cat scratches. I slowed down after that.
