Thoughts on this screen test?

I think this would be an accurate representation of how to test if your screen can accept all of the colors it *should*.

The gradient on the right is exaggerated but gives a clear picture of what would be wrong..

Since when does the screen affect how many colors it can display? If I turn down my colors to 256 does that mean I have a crappy screen??

Well if you're in '32bit mode' and you see banding in the gradient, then you would have a bad screen, right?

Actually I just set my color to 16 bit and it does give banding.. so the same might apply to those crappy 18 bit LCDs.

With out changing any color settings on your monitor, stuck at 32bit color, if you look at the gradient and compare the left and right and they look similar (both have banding) then your monitor is crappy, right?? So if you see on the left what you see on the right, then you have a problem. (The right is exaggerated)

That screen test might be good, but it seems excessively exagerated. All but the very, very worst screens won't have many problems.

On my Viewsonic VG151, there's a little bit of banding around the middle of the gradient, and the gradient isn't really all that gradual. There seems to be a very large section of black before it goes gray. And then there are hints of red, then green, then blue.

The right, yes but the left, no since it's a perfect gradient. The right was the best I could do as a representation of what it looks about, though should be far better...

looks flawless on my 8 year old 17" CRT.
shows very very slight bands on one of the higher end dell laptop LCDs.
test is crap.

I think what this test is for is for LCDs, since some LCDs have trouble with smooth grayscale gradients. And some LCDs only are capable of showing color somewhere in the region of 65,000 colors.
Thing is though, some people can't see a difference between 16 bit and 32 bit color, even on a CRT.

looks perfect on a dell 2405fpw, but yeah turning it down to 16bit causes banding

crappy test imo, any lcd will be fine almost

The text box doesn't make sence the way it's worded; switch the words "left" and "right" around, then it makes sence.

hmm thats true, but anyone could make that association

mine passes nicely and it is a 6 bit cheap 17.in LCD. i don't think that this is a good test.
