thoughts on this laptop?

Brother-in-law is attending an online university, and wants to use some of his grant funds for a new laptop.

Assuming he doesn't have to purchase from some authorized vendors, or however procurement works through the grant, I thought this looked like a decent deal

He won't be doing any intense gaming. Mostly web surfing, word processing and fiddling with music. My only real requirements were:
- as much RAM as possible ('cause I know that when I'm not monitoring his computer usage, he's going to load tthis thing up with stupid useless junk to run in the background).
- built-in webcam+mic (for his classes).

Any comments on this laptop, or the Gateway brand in general? I'd be happy to find something cheaper as well.

I have a Gateway T-series, and am pretty happy with it. Their prices are great, and build quality is more than suitable.

You'll spend probably an hour removing bloat though.

Also of note, that laptop features Vista 64. If your brother has any very old hardware (scanners, printers, etc), he may be hard-pressed to find working drivers, so look into that first. I run Vista 64 on a few machines, and have only have a problem with a 5 year old USB scanner from some weird knock-off brand.

That's a pretty good deal. It is a little weak in the CPU but with 4GB's of memory and a 320GB HD that is a tough deal to beat at that price.
