Thoughts on this 60-80mm fan adapter, other recommendations? NEW - benefit to getting an SK-7?

I'm looking to quiet down my system a little and I think I need to start with the CPU fan since my case fans are already Panaflo L1As and I have a TT Silent PurePower 420W that seems quiet. I have the Taisol CGK760092 with the stock fan, 21CFM, 36.5 dB, 60mm

I'm thinking I want to change to a 80mm fan since they usually move more air and are quieter. So I was looking at this adapter, Fan Adapter From the research I've done, alot of people say fan adapters are a bad idea, actually increasing temps. My goal is to quiet the system down, it doesn't have to be silent, I just think I can get a little quieter fan that does the same job, and keep temps about where they are now, since I'm OCing, but I could live with a couple degree increase.

People say that since the air is being redirected/restricted, the 80mm fan doesn't move as much air as what it's specs. say it does. By looking at the fan adapter I linked, it seems more open around the edges so the air shouldn't be as restricted.

I have the Fong Kai FK-603 case, another option I thought about is not using the CPU fan at all!! The CPU heat could just be taken away via the duct that this case comes with. I'm not using the duct right now, I found temps. actually went down and it was quieter without it. I suppose cavitation between the exhaust fan and the CPU fan.

I really don't want to get a new HSF, the Taisol is cheap, good reviews, and I love the triple clip. I know there is better but...

I'd go with a closed adapter (example)... I have one identical to the one you linked, and more air enters/exits through the open sides than through the actual heatsink.

So can I assume then that your temps. went way up? Anyone comment on the adapter amcdonald linked and this one? This one doesn't say "aerodynamic".

Check these out.

I myself went from a 60mm delta fan 37cfm/46db to a 80mm Panaflo 39cfm/32db
As for what people are telling you about temps. Dont believe them. I have a XP2100 and my temps went down a couple degrees, and now I can talk in my den without yelling over that loud azz delta fan.
By the way, on that above link I have the Aluminum fan adapter. Any questions let me know. Take care.

Hmm, it just dawned on me. The duct fan was sucking air out of the case and the CPU fan was moving air the opposite direction, hence the cavitation. I guess I didn't think about having the duct fan bring in cooler air and blow onto the HSF, I guess I thought it was supposed to be my exhaust fan. But with the PSU doing the exhausting... I think I'll have to try that and see what happens to temps.

The only issue I see is, the duct fan may be taking in the air coming out of the PSU.

yelling over a fan? please it's not that LOUD! I sleep with my 48db fan on full blast. You have dog ears or something that makes it seem louder than it is?

You are the exception to the rule... a smartfan2 on full is ridiculously annoying.

Thanks for the input. How about just getting a new HS that holds an 80mm fan? Is this a better option?

That is the best way to go. I got some of the blue clear acryllic adapters shown in an earlier reply, and they actually raised the cpu temp. Primarily because some of the air was ricochetting back from the heat sink, a fault of the adapter. I'm planning on an 80 fan to 60 heatsink and venting it outside the case with dryer hose. IE it will suck cool air from outside the case and blow it onto the cpu.

Youve got to be kidding, I just changed from the 60mm Delta to a 80mm fan at 22db and the difference is astounding. The Delta is just ridiculously loud, you have to turn the TV high just to hear anything. You dont realize how insane it drives you till you get a quiete fan. And as for sleeping with it on... yeah right. :D

Yeah, get a Thermalright SK-7, its half the price of the SLK-800 and performs nearly as good. I just got me one and my temps are far lower than with my old crummy SK-6 + Delta 60mm combo. :D

I thought I had it in this thread but guess not...

I put on the 80-60 adapter that I linked in the OP and my load temps went down about 2-3 degrees and it's alot quieter. I think the air coming out the sides can also help to cool northbridge and such and shouldn't give you the restriction that you were seeing. Try one! Now I hear my hard drives spinning and my GF4 fan rattling away.

I know amcdonald would not approve. ;)

I'm only hitting about 47C load now with a Taisol HS, Panaflo L1A, and the fan adapter. How much if any, will I benefit by spending $15 on a SK-7? Maybe will help when I start hitting the OC threshold? And anyone know how the SK-7 fits on a MSI KT4 Ultra?

My proc. specs. and current OC are in my sig.

SK-7 will be worth the 15 dollars because itll last you for a good lond while, as well as letting you natively load 80mm fans onto it. 15 dollars is nothing anyway, more like pocket money, and the product is more than worth it. :) I bought a fan adapter then saw the Sk-7 the same day, needless to say the fan adapter went straight onto ebay. :D

add the TT Volcano 7+ fan to the list when its set to "high"
medium is tolerable, low is very quiet but on high...i swear to god, its just this terrible buzzing in your ears that does not quit

you have a good 20C spare at full load before your cpu should start being unstable...
