Thoughts on the Wii U

They did miss a big opportunity at E3. What they showed looked good, but it wasn't enough. Honestly, I was bummed that Retro is working on a new DK instead of a new Metroid.

Would have been nice if we got a new fully 3D Mario platformer instead of the style of the 3DS 3D Mario.

Mario Kart looked great, and all the games running at 60FPS is a big plus.

I really wished we would have seen at least something on a new Metroid, Zelda, and F Zero game. Even little teaser letting us know they are in the pipeline would have done.

it looks interesting but thats what i thoght about the Wii and bought one and hardly ever played it...only certain games are really worth playing on a wii and usually they are simple games

I was actually a bit bummed with the Wii U. I was at Ars earlier this morning, and they had the headline "Nintendo’s E3 message: Wii U games are coming, just not quite yet" and a picture of Mega Man. I thought we were getting a new Mega Man game on the Wii U, but no... it's just Smash Bros. 🙁 🙁

Precisely why I am so disappointed. We just got a 2D Donkey Kong for 3DS which was basically ported from the Wii. They don't need another one.

it is funny thinking back how many of us were saying nintendo wasn't having their own conference because they didn't have anything to show, and how many people were defending them and how they were going to have all these amazing games to show, and justifying why not having a conference was a good idea.

welp, looks like those of us saying it was because they didn't haev shit to show were correct. lol.

Many of us know the game all too well, and while their hearts are in the right place (with a positive outlook) some people just can't handle the thought of us naysayers being right. I just don't get excited anymore. I won't pre-order any of these systems. When the games are actually out and there, then I'll drop my money on them, until then...I'm not buying any promises or consoles.

They had a fair bit to show and they did take up an hour. They could have done a big in your face conference like the others but they did a much more humble and non glitchy approach that I did find refreshing and hope we see more of instead of cars/trucks and tons of fake real time demos.

As I said above though, they could have done better and should have really.

This is why the WiiU is not selling well, not enough good games. They screwed up by not getting enough good games out before the two new consoles are out. They had a long head start and totally fumbled it.

I admitted to being that guy and I truly thought they had something special for us. I was wrong. I can be wrong

If nothing else, I think it takes stones to use E3 to announce game delays. I actually somewhat Nintendo's dedication to quality over quantity. The games I remember best tend to be Nintendo games (playing OoT, Mario 64, Starfox, ect)

Yea but at the rate they're going, there won't be any more Nintendo games to remember.

Except 3DS. I mean...they had to reassure people and just telling us what we knew already, that Smash Bros and Mario Kart were coming is just not enough. Announcing mega man for smash bros? Um...ok? Another 2D Donkey Kong...excuse me while I take a nap. I just don't get it... at least 3DS gets some love.

Where is the Mario 64 sequel (or similar type of game), New Metroid game, new zelda game. Even just an announcement and maybe a title with some character sketches would have gone a long, long way.

Retro responded a bit when people asked why they didn't do Metroid instead of DK. They said something along the lines of, we have unfinished business with DK or something similarly lame. But they apparently got to choose which to do and they stuffed a frozen banana up our asses.

Haha...wow

I'm seriously saddened. Almost enough to trade in my WiiU for now and rebuy later at cheaper price. I dunno.

I disagree with that. The games they announced this fall are all ones that I'm interested in. I think the Wii U remains the most family friendly way to get "into" gaming - Mario, Sonic, Pikmin, Wonderful 101, and Donkey Kong look like tremendous fun. I'm also eager to learn about the tweaks made to Wind Waker as that was one of my most memorable Zelda games (right next to OoT).

There is an article on Gamespot that I think summed up my thoughts well. Sony/MS announced all these gorgeous looking games, but they all seemed pretty similar: dark, world ending, apocalyptic themes. For all the power, the games themselves don't have me tremendously excited - I'm more excited about what it means for PC gaming.

Then Nintendo comes out with all these bright colorful worlds that seem genuinely unique. Sure, the characters are familiar - but the way they use them looks awesome. If they announce a $50 - 100 price cut later this year they are going to do just great this holiday season - think how much easier it's going to be to purchase a Wii U than an Xbox or PS4.

I think that Nintendo is now playing it's own game. Rather than try to compete with MS & Sony they are sticking to what they know - great accessible games. I believe the day they start playing on MS/Sony's terms is the day we lose something special in gaming. They are perfectly positioned to do a "relaunch" this fall/winter and have great games coming in Spring 2014.

I've got one of the first amazon PS4s preordered (launch edition woot), so it's not like I hate MS/Sony. I primarily game on my high end PC, but also have owned all the consoles. I feel like MS/Sony are very similar, except that MS takes its customers for granted. Nintendo is one that keeps me coming back for something "fresh" - even if it isn't the most pretty.

So you're happy with getting a rebadged Mario 3D Land and another 2D donkey kong? Seriously...?

I see 14 games I can buy somewhere else and a couple rebadged games with new levels and then another smash bros...

Common....I could accept New Super Mario for a launch game, but a year after the console releases I expect something more grand than that.

The ONLY standouts for me are wonderful 101 and Pikmin

Ugh... too many people at Best Buy playing the Nintendo games!

EDIT:

Not to mention there was only one Wii U, and they only had Mario, Mario Kart, Wind Waker HD and Donkey Kong. Where's Sonic!? 😡

I wouldn't say all of them were dark, but certainly most were. MS did announce an open world shooting game that sticks out in my mind as being a colorful game, which was Sunset Overdrive.

They're only showing off Nintendo games; none of the 3rd party games are being shown off.

Since SEGA is contracted to make three Sonic games for Nintendo, Sonic would technically be second party. That counts, right? 🙁
That's not first party, but it would be nice. Sonic: Lost World looks like a blast.

Yeah... I guess I was mostly disappointed that they would shove a HD remake like Wind Waker there and not an iconic game like Sonic. It is a Nintendo exclusive on both the Wii U and 3DS. I think what disappointed me the most was the utter lack of hardware to support the event. There was just this giant mob around the single Wii U, and I probably would have been there for at least an hour if not more just waiting. Given I got there at 7 and the event ended at 8, that wouldn't leave much for me.

Maybe I'll check it out on Saturday, and see if I can get a chance to play. I did watch some people play the new Mario and Mario Kart. I didn't really see much new in the latter, and I was mostly disappointed after seeing all the rumors of one of the three SEGA exclusives being a Sonic + Mario Kart game. 🙁

They failed worse than MS. Sucks.
