Thoughts on the Ghibli?

I've been considering gifting myself a birthday present of a Model S recently.. but then I saw the press release on the Ghibli, and became pretty piqued at potentially owning a car from a manufacturer I could never justify the prices on.

What are the thoughts on this particular model? And what type of demographic would you see as being the driver for it?

The styling is pretty similar, so do you want no gas + low maintenance but range limitations, or a high-profile car that you can drive & drive? Also, are you interested in the Ghibli S at all?

I wish I had this dilemma. I'd probably get the Maserati. I like the Italian styling. As far as impractical cars go, the Ghibli is probably the more practical of the two. Especially for long range and cold climate driving. Also going to come in a diesel version.

I sat in one at the LA auto show, was really put off by their main marketing tagline of "why buy an MBZ/BMW/Audi when you could have a Maserati?" They are pretty much marketing it to a lower build point.

Sitting inside didn't feel all that special, especially seeing how you could get a loaded E/5/CTS/A6 for that price. If the badge really maters that much then maybe I suppose.

Isn't it basically the same thing as a Chrysler 300?

I would be very hesitant to get one of those new, take a look at the residual value of something like a quattroporte.

I'd rather get a used last gen QP that still works.
Have someone else take the worst of the Italian depreciation, and factory issues, and then only deal with what crops up over the mid-life. It's still going to cost you the odd big ticket, but at least you won't have a new car that won't work...

Also, old QPs are so pretty. Just gotta live with the mediocre trans, especially the auto is apparently not that great.
