I'm strongly considering a chevy spark. Most likely, a used 2013 one.

The size, style, and price meets my expectations...so I'm just wondering if there is any other negatives I need to consider.

- I'm okay with the size as this will only be for 2 adults, for now.
- This will be mainly used for driving around town and daily commute to work. I imagine maybe a long distance drive (200miles) once every 3 to 4 months to visit family.

My only question is the longevity of the vehicle, and whether if any maintenance costs will add up.

- Since it is an american car, parts and repair should be typical, and won't be expensive to maintain right?
- what are the chances of a car crapping out at certain mileage (60k, 70k), if I regularly maintain the vehicle? I would like to have a car and keep it for as long as possible, or until I'm ready to buy another one.

I've only had honda's, so I don't know about Chevey's, fords, etc etc.

It's either that, or get a 2008 to 2009 honda fit, with 70k + miles, at a similar price

It is on the same platform as the Chevy Sonic correct? The GF has one of those and it isn't a bad little car. We haven't put 70k miles on it, but it seems built well enough.

Honestly, there isn't a car out now I wouldn't expect to get 70k miles with regular scheduled maintenance.

I would only be wary of the car for highway driving. Small cars like that aren't happy on the highway. Otherwise I see no reason to not get one as a city car as long as you like it.

thanks. And I'm curious about 'be wary about highway driving,' because I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about road noise, or are you saying that 60 to 70 mph for extended period will severely wear the car out?

I am currently driving a 2011 Honda Fit Sport manual, and it is a brilliant little car.

Very comfortable on long trips, @34mpg mixed city/hwy, and cavernous when the rear seats are folded down. Nothing else in the same class comes close to the spacious utility and rear leg room. I am not in love with the car, but I can't find anything to dislike about it other than the lack of Bluetooth (I resolved this by spending @$150 at Crutchfield and a hour of my time).

I test drove the Spark before getting the Fit, and it just couldn't compare in my opinion. The Spark is a great car, but the Fit ticks all the boxes with no compromises.

Yes I think the Sonic is more substantial if you want Chev, I wouldn't worry about longevity only resale but since your a keeper
Also Mazda 2's or a Kia Soul maybe, Nissan Versa
Fits are excellent cars too

Small car, with the typical punched-in and squished look that plagues most tiny cars. Not something that I'd care to drive myself.

Other than that, I feel that most vehicles these days, regardless of make, should run a good while without fuss if maintained properly. 60-70k miles is nothing, depending on the type of driving. 70k miles of NYC is obviously going to be a heck of a lot harder on a vehicle than 70k miles of open road cruising.

Friend has a Fit (5 speed) and loves it. Just traded it in for a new one actually.

My immediate assumption would be that the Spark is a giant piece of ****.

I don't have any experience with the spark, but its older predecessor the Aveo I have driven as rental. That thing was very very sensitive on the road. I was white knuckling it at 68-70 MPH, in it's defense it was raining lightly out, but still I never driven such a nervous car on a highway and I owned a Geo Tracker that topped out at 75-80 (80 only when going down hill).

I don't know if its still the case on the Sonic/Spark. But being based off the Aveo designed by Deawoo would scare me much.
