Thoughts on the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel?

Been looking at this car for a while now, and I like what I see. A Mercedes Diesel engine, the same one as the ML cars have. Good fuel economy, great offroad capabilities, nice and roomy. I'm actually going to test drive one this week with my dad.

Anyone have any experience with these? Also I don't know much about Jeep, but how reliable are the cars?

Any Grand Cherokee owners welcome to pitch in their thoughts, even if you don't have a diesel.

Must be imperial gallons because they show the 5.7L Hemi at 27mpg on the highway, which is about 8 or 9 higher than reality here in the states.

I didn't realize the imperial gallon was that much more, though...

It makes no sense to buy the GC diesel where I live becuase of the price of diesel fuel.

Make sure it actually has UCONNECT if you want it. The buttons are on all the MyGig radios, but that doesn't mean it actually has the feature.

Make sure the dealer upgrades the MyGig to the latest software and Gracenotes for you as well.

Ya I think they use different gallons, but looking at some reviews of the car online they actually say the car gets better fuel economy than advertised. On the site they say over 700 km on a tank. After doing some of my own calculations that number is actually around 800 km per tank. Not bad for an SUV with all the capabilities.

And ya Diesel gas here is more expensive, but it still works out to better savings in the end run. Not to mention Diesel engines are tanks and can go longer than gasoline.

Don't forget that diesel is expensive. I've seen it cheaper than gas in my lifetime, but not in recent memory. In my local area a week ago I saw gas at $1.99 for 87 and diesel at 2.99!

Diesel hasn't been cheaper than gas since 2004. Still tho, should be a great vehicle.

Overall, I love my Grand Cherokee. The only downside was the mileage of the Hemi, but even that is not as bad as I thought. The MDS works well and I have gone over 20mpg and the engine isn't really broken in yet.

I got a great deal on a 2008, so I bought it.

I wanted one ever since I rented a 2006 for a trip and I couldn't pass up the price.

Some pics of mine. It has the optional 18's on it.

Not much snow around here, so I can't say.

I'm carrying my family from NC to PA for Christmas to see the relatives, but it's not supposed to snow up there, either.

I will be taking it on some rough roads in the back woods of VA, but that will not be until next summer.

The auto headlights work well, as do the rain sensing wipers.

Both the rear mirror and the side mirrors dim automatically, which is nice. The side mirrors are heated.

The heated seats are nice on cold mornings, and the second row is heated as well.

The Boston Acoustics sound system is very loud and sounds very good. There are controls for it on the back of the steering wheel.

The remote start works very well.

It took a while to get used to the auto climate control, but I like it now.

One good thing is that if you don't like the auto stuff, you can turn nearly all of it off if you want via the Info Center.

If you haven't already, you can look at a 2009 owner's manual here:

Not all Jeeps have low resale value. Jeep Wranglers have a great resale value. ;)

Maybe he plans on buying it to keep it not sell it in a couple years, in which case resale value doesn't mean much. And honestly, buying a car based on resale value is dumb IMO, buy the car you want and just keep it instead of worrying about how much you can sell it for in a couple years.

Don't care about resale value, I'm actually researching some cars for my dad, and he keeps them till they drop so it doesn't matter. We both have a feeling his current car is going to die any day now, so getting ready slowly for something new.

I have a 2007 Grand Cherokee Overland which I love. While I have considered replacing it with a diesel with the lease is up next summer, I can say around here a GC Limited diesel goes for around $29-30k, where as I can get another 4x2 Overland for $26,995. I don't think the diesel engine and the lesser options package is worth the price premium.

One example does not make the case.

All American cars have shitty resale value compared to their Jap/European counterparts. Cars aren't investments anyways.
