i've been looking for an inexpensive laser printer for my father and i've pretty much decided on this model. does anyone have positive or negative expereinces with this model? i read a review at hardware central here and it seemed like just what i'm looking for. my dad wants something that will be relatively fast, but most of the things he and my mother will be printing will not need to be of absolute stellar quality. (alot of church newsletters and semi-professional black and white documents)

From what I have read at epinions.com and at pcworld, the Samsung is a good choice, as is the Minolta QMS PagePro 1100L. I own a PagePro 1100L and it spits out B+W text like there's no tommorow. :)

yeah i have a minolta 18L and love it, but i think its more than my dad needs (and i dont have that kind of money to spend either) only problem with minolta equipment is its harder to get toner and stuff. id like to get one where you cna pick toner up from a store which is more my dads style

I just picked up one of these printers, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed
by the speed and the quality of the drivers. The print quality is alright too.
For the price, it can't be beat. The only downsides I see are the "high" cost
per page (~2 cents), fixed 8MB memory, puny 66mhz processors, and lack of
built in ethernet. :)

I also notice that the fan in the unit is a pitiful 40mm fan... I think I'm getting an
idea...

got this printer, love this printer. I picked it up from amazon a while back with free shipping and extra toner for about 175 bucks. It replaced my HP laserjet 6l, which sadly has feeding problems. I would say that this printer is extremely fast (once you get it going), and will print at about one page every five seconds, which is quite impressive.

IIRC Samsung laser printers are rebadged Lexmarks which are pretty good for home use and are very inexpensive. (Toner can be expensive though)

It's still cheaper than ink though.

I was referring to Lexmark toner. ;)

the most important thing to consider, besides price of course, since you're buying a laser...is exactly how much printing are we talking? If they're going to be doing like 20K+ then you'd better not even fool w/ NEthing but the Brother HL-1440. You have to take this in2 account b/c of the cost of a new drum. After you figure in the cost of a new drum for that thing U R talkin' about...PLUS more Toner...then you've got WAY over $.02/pg. Whereas w/ the Brother you STILL come to ONLY $.016/pg AFTER having to buy a new drum... and something like $.006/pg B4 havin' to purchase the drum.

Another plus for the brother is its upgradability...U can open up the back w/o much trouble (two screws), pop in a 72pin SIMM and you're upgraded! :) I upgraded mine in like 10 minutes w/ old ram I had layin' around! :) Pretty sweet...

hope this is helpful...as for the price...ck. the HOT DEALIOS section here...I've seen some interesting prices in there! some SUB$200! MAKE ME SCREAM! :| I paid $280 in AUGUST!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

The cartridge is actually toner + drum so you can replace the thing relatively cheaply...

Unless I'm mistaken (which I'm almost positive I'm not), the drum and toner are most definately two different pieces. The high yield toner (tn460 - 6000 pages @ 5%) is only around $75, where as the drum unit (DR400 - supposedly good for 20000 pages) is around $160. So it's still not bad compared to some companies, but it's close to the cost of a new printer anyway.

Sorry. I should have specified I was talking about the Brother HL-1440, not the Samsung. I got a HL-1440 myself ($249 from Staples.com) and am totally happy with it. The only thing I'd like is a little more memory, which can be fixed. :)

If you haven't already purchased a laser printer I would strongly suggest you take a look at the links I posted in this thread.

Give the Brother HL-1440 printer a try.
