Thoughts on purchasing a sub $1k laptop? How about the sony CW series?

Needs to have dedicated graphics and be relatively small, and have HDMI.

Sony VAIO VPC-CW17FX/W
14" screen, 1366x768 resolution and LED backlight
weighs about 5 lbs

I found this sony at best buy and i think it's pretty awesome for the price.

Is there a better choice for portability but w/ dedicated graphics that i'm missing? the smaller the better, but i'm not willing to trade off the HDMI port graphics.

Looks pretty good. Also look up the ASUS UL80Vt; thin, light, good battery life, and meets your requirements. The specs are very similar to the Sony as well, except that it has a bigger battery and a (slower but less power-hungry) CULV Core 2 Duo processor.

looks pretty good. i dont know if BB carries it though. I will be replacing the hard drive for any laptop w/ an Intel mainstream 80 gb SSD i believe.

that asus has an awesome feature, switchable graphics card!!!! i've been dying to have that feature in a laptop for years. I had no idea it was available yet!

That Sony looks like a good deal.

An alternative might be a Dell Studio 14z which is a good deal as a refurb from their outlet store. Mine was $405 but that is rare. Usually about $500. Has Nvidia 9800m graphics hdmi, Core 2 Duo T6500 and is a little lighter than the Sony, but no built in dvd drive. I added a slim external blu-ray dvd writer from ebay for $60.
