Thoughts on pedophilia.

In the last several weeks, there have a number of arrests made over child pornography possession in my area of the country. One of the men arrested was a grade school teacher, and there was much outrage from parents who have children in the school district that this man worked in. The arrests were probably linked to the shutdown of the child porn site Dreamboard a couple of months ago.

I guess the point I want to make is: While people pushing for gay rights harder than ever, pedophiles are increasingly marginalized. Yes, some of them may be bad people who abuse children - and these people should feel the full force of the law on their backs. But, at the same time, you have pedophiles who have done nothing wrong - except for possessing child pornography. Personally, while people should be punished for having kiddie porn stashed on their hard drives, such an offense should not be considered a felony. It's a bit heavy-handed, no?

Furthermore, is pedophilia a mental illness? If we can classify pedophilia as a mental illness, then I suppose we can classify homosexuality as a mental illness, too. But again, while both may be illnesses, there is more accommodation for those who are gay.

While I completely support harsh punishment against those who create child pornography and/or rape children, I think society should be more lenient in terms of dealing with those pedophiles who merely consume such content, by sending them to mental care institutions so that they can be cured of their pedophilia.
 
If people are storing CP, they are creating a market for it whether or not they are paying customers.

They just arrested a couple that kidnapped a 14 year old girl and was selling her on backpage.

I agree. Actual abuse associated with the creation of such content should be harshly punished.

But possession is another thing altogether.

*sigh* I know you are trolling, but you make arguments that sound informed so some people might read them and think you have a point. So, I'll work to debunk your troll.

First, it is not against the law to be a pedophile. It is aginst the law to abuse children. It is aginst the law to possess depictions of children being abused, real or imagined.

We don't make people illegal, we make actions illegal.

Second, pedophilia is not like homosexuality. Trying to link the two is disingenuous in the extreme. One deals with two consenting adults, the other with a adult abusing his power over a child.

As for your mental illness argument, I could make the exact same argument about just about any preference:
Is liking boobs (Mammaphilia) a mental illness? If we can classify pedophilia as a mental illness, then I suppose we can classify Mammaphilia as a mental illness, too. But again, while both may be illnesses, there is more accommodation for those who like boobs.
 
why shouldn't possession be treated harshly as well? I don't understand the difference you are trying to make.
 
Surgical castration is a good solution. Lot of controversy over death penalty, jailing them for life is a waste of taxpayer dollars, forcing them to register and live in restricted parts of town is not a very safe and effective solution, IMHO, surgical castration will send a strong message and solve the problem. Sending them to mental institution is a stupid solution that will cost a lot more

I really doubt it. There's no science to back this idea up. It may work, or it may create an even worse pedophile.

It's one of the few crimes considered so egregious that even peripheral acts are criminalized.

Also - no, homosexuality and pedophilia are not both mental illnesses that should receive similar "accomodations". The reason one is criminalized and the other is not is because one of the two involve sex with those who cannot legally consent.
 
I assisted JAG with some computer forensics in a pedophilia case. Tell me how you feel after you see pictures of a 40+ year old male penetrating a 2 year old girl with his penis. Oh and tell me AFTER you have a child of your own.

Me? I decided then and there that bullets are the answers to pedophiles, no matter their affiliation with the problem.

I feel sorry for the people involved in the court cases for things like this. It would be a punishment to have to sit through something where they showed that.
