I like to think I'm not stupid, most likely stubborn.

I believe my MOBO is bad, but want a second opinion.

Asus k7v133
256 MB ram
900 Mhz Duron
Maxtor 7200 40Gig HD

Sometimes it boots no prob. Lately when I power up all but the HD powers. If I disconnect the IDE cable, the HD spins up. I would think it's the MB/HD controller, but since it's worked before I can't be sure.

HD worked in another system with no problems. IDE cable has been changed and no probs, 400watt PS.

Thanks for any input

could be a short in the MB

could be the powersupply.

Here's a little suggestion, maybe this will shine some light.

Try a different connector into the Hard Drive concerning Power to the hard drive. Maybe the power coming out of the PS is bad on that line. Ya never know I guess.

If it's not something petty or simple like that, I'd blame it on the Mother Board.

I Acutally tried that earlier this evening, so that was ruled out. I think I'll be taking the board back on monday.

Do the same symptoms show on both IDE (1&2)? Have you checked on a CD-Rom slaved to the HDD to see if it's also powering up? If the slaved CD-Rom will not power then it's obviously a mobo. But if it power up by itself or when slaved to the HDD then it's not the mobo.
