Considering buying the base config of the HP Pavilion dv7t for a friend. Just wanted to see what people here thought of it. Not many consumer reviews out there, seems to be a new model. I'll be putting an SSD in it also. She'll be using it for home office and web surfing. Nothing demanding.

Comes with all this for $620 with my employee discount program.
• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2330M (2.2 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)
• Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 [HDMI, VGA]
• Free Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• FREE Upgrade to 640GB 5400RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
• 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
• 17.3" HD+ HP BrightView LED (1600 x 900)
• SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
• HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
• Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN
• 2 year limited warranty included

My main concern is the screen. Is 1600x900 adequate for a 17.3" screen? Or will it look like a pixelated grid? The 1080p display is an extra $150 and is out of her price range.

Today, HP announc ed that they will be retainng their PC business - so that is a plus. the 1600x900 on a letterbox format will not be too pixelated. Overall, it looks like a fair deal.

Thanks for the response. That announcement is precisely the reason I started looking at the HPs again. I was considering the Inspiron 15R before that. Looks like I'm going with the HP then.

This is turning out to be one heck of a laptop. Turns out it has a second hard drive bay. I first chatted with HP to see if it comes with the extra HD caddy and cable, and they said it doesn't. I'd have to customize the unit with two HDs in order to get the needed cable, and that they will not sell it separately.

Naturally, I didn't buy that as an answer, so rather than arguing with them I decided to call the support line to try a different person. The guy on the phone talked to the "product guy" and confirmed that it already comes with the needed caddy and cable. How sweet is that? I ordered the laptop, will let you guys know my thoughts.
