Thoughts on Gateway 7405GX Laptop Computer

Hey everyone,

A friend of mine is purchasing a laptop and he has been looking at the Gateway 7405GX. It's only $1,250 at BestBuy and seems like a good deal.

-AMD Athlon 64 3200+
-512MB PC2700 DDR RAM
-Mobile ATI Radeon 9600 with 64MB of memory
-80Gb Harddrive (unknown speed)
-DVD Burner
-15.4" WXGA TFT display
-7.5 Pounds

Seems like a decent buy to me, although I don't know much about laptops especially those made by Gateway. BTW battery life isn't a huge concern for him, as it will be plugged in most of the time, but how long would the battery last on this particular model? Any other thoughts on this laptop would be most appreciated!

Thanks a bunch!

Battery life will be bad, probably under 2 hours.

Gateway is not the best brand for laptops, it's in the third or fourth rank:

IBM (until the new owners destroy it)
Dell, Sony
Toshiba, HP, Compaq
Gateway, Acer, etc.

Thanks for the info. But as far as value for the dollar is concerned, how does this laptop compare against others?

It changes week to week, in part depending on the current Hot Deals and Dell deals. You might go to Dell.com and configure a similar Inspiron, then perhaps check Hot Deals forum (search "laptop") and also check the gaming laptops at www.IBuyPower.com
