I'm in the market for a DVD drive eide or scsi. This one my brother was gonna give to me but I don't know if it's any good. Also, what are other good brands that you guys would recommend or not recommend. I'm leaning towards Pioneer, Toshiba, or Creative Labs.

Thanks

I bought a pioneer 106s, but I've been told that pioneer's stuff isn't top quality. Still, they pretty much own the market.

I've loved every second my Toshiba dvd has been in my drive. I have a standalone player which I love, but this drive is awesome. Pretty quiet and great transfer speeds, great rip speeds with a decent tolerance for scratched discs, and great for cloning.

I got a Toshiba 12X/40X DVD drive to replace my Creative 8X/24X. The creative took a VERY long time to recognize the media and it was fairly loud. My Toshiba is the complete opposite.

My decision to get the Toshiba and ditch the Creative was based on all the post I've read in this forum. Others have had problems with their Creatives but when it came to the Toshiba, people rarely had any negatives to say about it.

I would suggest you take a look at the Pioneer 16X 106/116 models. They are very nice and perform excellent. They are also the only DVD drives I know of that utilize the ATA 66 standard. I am very happy with my 106S (Slot Load). :)

Avoid Creative like the Plague. Toshiba's are definetly good, fast and quiet. Toshiba's may have a problem ripping at above 2x though. I've heard once from a repair person that the Pioneer drives are made from cheap parts. I have one... no problems so far and my rips are ~7x.

What do you guys think of A Open DVD drives? Costco has a pretty good deal on one. I think it is a 10-12X DVD 40x CD-ROM.

Thoughts?

Toshiba x16 (SD-M1502) has a problem, i.e. its firmware mkes it to rip at only x2, and there is no fix (yet).
Pioneer Slot loading are loud and not as reliable, tray loading is better but less "kewl"

stay away from Creative Labs!!! (unless its a "Pioneer Inside"...)

bernse,

The Aopen DVD-1240 is a good drive. I ran some benchmarks on one about a week ago and the DVD speed ran consistent at 9X and the CD-R speed at 28X or 33X. Im thinking of buying one myself.

I'll 2nd that. I love mine to death..it's fast, not too loud, and the slot loading part is about as sweet as you can get. Plays DVD's great too.
