Thoughts on completely-isolated prison cells?

A small prison cell with a bed, a toilet, an oversized hamster wheel for exercise and a flap in the door for food to pass through.

I wonder how effective a prison sentence served in a cell like this is compared with the status quo.

EDIT: Putting a hamster wheel in each room might not be cost effective. As an alternative, I propose one community treadmill machine.

Nobody here would complain if you gave them a decent lappy and their own T1 line in that room.

The internet connection would be better than what I've had to put up with for the most part of the past 8 weeks!

It would probably be considered imhumane or some crap like that. I think it's a great idea. They should get time outside too, but not to have fun and play basketball on the court. They should made to do manual labor.

Who needs a hamster wheel if you've got a T1 connection? On the plus side, the hamster wheels would never require service. That'd save the prison industry millions.

That wouldn't work to rehabilitate prisoners. Our system is based on rehabilitation, not punishment.

That's a lie if I ever saw one.

(Not claiming that you are the liar here, Nebor, only that that description is more of a cliche than any sort of truth. The "justice" system only serves to produce more-efficient criminals. It's a criminal farm, essentially. Instead of raising farm animals, you grow criminals, and when they are "ripe", release them back into society. It keeps those that are in power and in a position to gain financially from the "justice system", well-paid and well-fed. The key trick is to match criminal production rates to societal demand - if they "fear" an increase in certain types of crimes, or in certain areas - make sure to "produce" them, and thus gain from the eventual expanded budgets in that area. It's kind of like unions too - once budgets and dept. personnel expand, they rarely get cut back.)

I think the people would go insane before any kind of rehabilitation would occur. Im guessing it would fall under cruel and unusual punishment.

Yeah, would you really want to be the neighbour of someone who lived like that for two years?

Unless you're talking about murderers and rapists, you have to think about when they come out.

For a murdering rapist, I'd vote for that.
