I'm looking into purchasing a laptop, and I happened to see a Compaq laptop whose specs are just what I need. My onlt question is about Compaq build quality and their level of customer support. Build quality is one of the primary reasons I have shyed away from Dell.

Any suggestions or personal experience about them would be greatly appreciated.

from my expierence they aren't as good as dell's and cost waaay more . Stick with dell, you can't go wrong. Toshiba's/ibm are also top notch.

I have had a Compaq laptop a couple years ago. It was way overpriced and I was stupid to even buy it. I have friends who have purchased IBM and Dell laptops, they're definitely high quality and worth the price. . . You would be way better off with IBM or Dell. My roommate had a toshiba laptop and the hd spontaneously erased itself TWICE. never found out why but he hated toshiba. So I'd say IBM or Dell.

i personally think that certain lines compaq has are better than dells. The presario 1700 comes to mine. Also their armadas are great. Sure they dont have geforce2gos in their machines, but only dell and toshiba put those in , and no one does in their corporate laptops.

compaq isn't expensive though, i dont know what kind ofcrack you guys are on, dell is usually more expensive than most laptops now.

i saw the fry's ad last weekend, they had a compaq 900mhz athlon, 256mb ram, 20 gigs 14" screen and dvd, for $850 - $50 rebate. Dell doesnt even make laptops that cost within $500 of that.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. For the record, I'm looking at the 1710 and 1720 series. If anyone has personal experience with either of these two models, or has dealt with a Compaq warranty before, I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Thanks!

i had a celeron 600 presario 1700. its a bit different than the new 1700Ts, because the video card is different. its was pretty nice though. the CPU is upgradeable. the only thing i didnt like was that the wrist rest got kinda hot if you used the hard drive a lot.

my dad used to have a presario 1920 which the 1700 replaced. the backlight on the screen died. it was under warranty so he called them, they ovenighted a box to him, he put it in , and got it back like 3 days later. so pretty good support it seems. the are usuall ypretty good with support, ask anyone who had an ipaq with the dust problem.
