Thoughts on AirTags and other trackers.

You put something expensive up for sale, vehicle, boat, RV/trailer, etc. You take precautions, but you still get hung by a bad check and don't find out about it for a few days, long after your stuff is gone. ID, plates on vehicle ... all faked..

BUT, you have an ace up your sleeve. You've installed some sort of geo tracking tag on the item. It's working and you know where your thing is.

If you let authorities know, can you be on the hook for a wiretapping type charge?

I don't take checks. If it's expensive enough, I'd be willing to go to a bank with them, and they can withdraw cash and hand it to me. Geotracking isn't a wiretap.

I'm not a lawyer, but I imagine intent matters. You're tracking property that belongs to you. Since the terms of the contract haven't been fulfilled, the property still belongs to you.

Technically could be argued that its still your property due to lack of payment and eg theft.

Have an airtag and a tile in my carry on luggage to go overseas in a few days. Will likely have to check it in the smaller Mediterranean airlines, so good to track.

Plus threw one in my backpack, since it has a lot of tech in it
