Thoughts on aftermarket warranty?

I would always be against such a thing. But at 200K miles my car is getting up there. I intend to keep it another year or two to drive back and forth to work. I can imagine needing a new motor in that time. Never done any tranny or clutch work as it's not been needed, most all of it is highway miles.

Is an aftermarket warranty in my situation something I should be thinking about? I know in general the whole idea and the companies that do them are rather shady. But I do a lot of contract negotiation with my job so I know how to read contracts and spot "outs".

Any constructive advice would be helpful, calling me an idiot for even considering it is also welcome. 🙂

Let me be more clear - I think I will need major powertrain repairs or replacement in the next 2 years or 80K miles, is an aftermarket warranty for me?

Save your $1,000 or $1200 that you will pay for this extended warranty for a possible head gasket replacement job. It is a gamble but in your favor. The car might last you another 2 years, then in that case you kept your money. I don't trust aftermarket insurance companies which are willing to sell a policy on a 200k vehicle.

I'm more concerned about crank and bottom end bearings. I'm approaching this with a "new or rebuilt motor" attitude which I can only guess is a 3-4k job parts and labor. It's not really about being surprised with a huge repair or replacement, more about can I get my money's worth from it?

Also agree with your assessment to not trust somebody that would underwrite a 200k vehicle, lose-lose for them.

200k is way past time to consider an extended warranty.

any company that will sell you on at that mileage (hell, most all aftermarket warranty companies, period) is going to be a bunch of crooks.

Any company that would warranty a car with 200k miles on it either has a huge list of exclusions or doesn't stand to be in business for very long.

In other words, if it sounds too good to be true...it probably is.

Honestly the motor is not what I would be concerned about. It probably has another 100,000 miles or more in it, especially if you mostly did highway commuting.

The only questionable bit would be the clutch. Again, the highway miles will help. I don't think you need to get paranoid about driving this car.

I don't think you'll be able to find anyone that will sell you a warranty with those miles.
Just keep putting money into your savings account if something goes.

Why do you think you're going to need a new engine? 200,000 miles isn't all that much to be honest. Unless you've been terrible at maintenance that engine is fine. Like thomasbrain said, you'll probably need a new clutch first.

Extended warranty on that mileage car is not worth the cost. Motor will last another 50K or so. Worst case, it starts to use some more oil. In which case, check it more often, ,maybe go up one weight say from 5W30 to 10W30 or even 10W40 (if climate is warm where you are at)

Agreed. My 97 Integra just rolled over 222k miles last week, and it's still running fine (with a heck of a lot more stop & go traffic than your TL).

Just keep up with regular maintenance and you should be fine. There's no "at x miles fall apart" parts in modern engines I'm aware of. 😀
