thoughts on 17" notebooks?

Is apple the only company with a 17" notebook? Any other companies gonna be producing a 17" notebook?

IMO, 17" is too big. I think the whole purpose of a notebook is to be light and portable. Doesn't fit either of those requirements, although it is only 1" thick. Still, 17" would be pretty cool. Personally, I like toshiba laptops.

What does everyone else think?

I think 16" is too big. 17" is WAY too big. On a laptop that is.

Laptops were made to be portable, not to have 17" LCDs on them 🙂

I had my choice when I got my new laptop and I went with the 15.2" Powerbook. The 17" is just too big to be lugging around all the time. If I was using it as a desktop replacement and wouldn't be toting it around, then I might have considered it. The fiber-optic keyboard is so cool.

nah... apple won't be alone very soon.

if one get a laptop not for portability.... then 17" is not a prob.

i'm still enjoying my 12" ibook.... good enuf for my usage. however, if i'm gonna use it for my work... writing code.... it will be pushing it abit since i got used to the 21" trinitron at work.

I think it's interesting that there seems to have been a trend over the last decade in making laptops larger...and I think it's just because they've been coming out with bigger and bigger screens, and laptop manufacturers think a big screen is a better selling point than a small laptop. don't you remember in in the mid 90s when almost all laptops had 10" or 12" screens and were so nice and compact?

I guess it really depends where your balance falls between desktop replacement and mobility. For me, I'm a fairly well built individual, and I like to be able to see a good deal when I'm working, so a 14-15" laptop is optimal for me. 12" is too small, and 17" is quite annoying to fit onto a lecture room "table" I'm sure. 🙂

I think for most people 17'' is too big. But for designers, video editors, web masters, etc. it is extremely attractive.

As a desktop replacement, I think 17" or even 16" screens are great, in the Al 17" Powerbook's case the weight isn't so much an issue as the sheer bulk. You can't buy a case very easily for it, and you'd have to have a large briefbase for it to fit. But it sure beats lugging around a full blown desktop case and monitor.

Ditto.

I saw it yesterday and the width of it is crazy. Looks nice but its just far too wide because of the 17" screen. The weight isn't much a problem as its light for its weight comapared to others.

I think the ideal portable screen size are the 14" now that come with ares of about 1400x1050 personally. 12" with a res of 1024x768 is just about 'alright'.
